IMO crypto-currencies aren't investments but zero sum game gambles -- I wouldn't invest more than I'd be willing to lose (which in my case is nothing).

How does that differ from regular currencies? I don't mean that sarcastically, but really. Ultimately, the value of any currency is based on a faith in its future value. Other currencies have governments to back them up, but no hard limits on making more. Bitcoin at least has a predictable effort that goes into mining and that generally increases faster than computer capacity.

I know close to nothing about currency markets, crypto or traditional, so maybe it's an ignorant question...

Right, I wouldn't call holding onto cash an investment either.   Mining is a different deal, that's creating value, vs just buying and holding currency -- if I could get electricity for free I would definitely be doing that.

Iceland have a monopoly with their hydro thermal.

Easy to mine early on, so might be worth mining for alternative coins. But given the effort, for $20 you can buy a shed load of some that might kick off.

Digital rupee would be interesting as if it appears.

Holy crap it was only £550 when I last looked at it and considered buying in. That wasn't long ago at all. Would it not be hard to cash out at crazy prices like that though?
