Opera now comes with a free, built-in VPN
« on: April 22, 2016, 04:20:06 AM »
http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2016/04/free-vpn-integrated-opera-for-windows-mac/

Opera's new dev version comes with a VPN client that is free to use. In March, Opera bought SurfEasy, a VPN provider that never caught my eye as they are one of those cheap VPNs that retains their logs, so privacy isn't a strong point.  The offer of free, built-in VPN does lend an interesting sales pitch angle for them. I wouldn't rely on it for security or privacy, but it might be good for checking geo-centric SERPs.

That's what I figured, thanks.

It'll be overwhelmed by users trying to get around regional restrictions on streaming.

I applaud them for bringing VPN into the grasp of the everyday user. This could be a game changer if other browsers follow suit. Otherwise it'll just be another quirky feature.

And even though they were supposedly bought out by a Chinese conglomerate, that purchase hasn't gone through yet. Sounds like the stockholders haven't approved it yet, so this is an Opera move. I wasn't sure how that would go over in China anyway. I assumed that the China group's interest was mainly in the mobile client.
