Google astroturfing campaign against Senate Bill 2992
« on: November 16, 2021, 07:09:15 PM »
Are any of you getting Google's emails trying to build an astroturf movement against Senate Bill 2992, aka "American Innovation and Choice Online Act," drafted by Klobuchar and signed onto by Kennedy, Grassley, Booker and others.

If you have a GMB listing, you at least got asked to sign up.

TLDR: Google and the Chamber of Commerce say it would "stymie innovation."

To preserve formatting and the key "before and after" images of how Google claims SERPs would appear if the bill passed, I anonymized and printed the email to PDF. See attached.

Honestly, I didn't look that closely at it. G has taught me that they are dishonest and nothing they say can be trusted.

I think they are reaching out to GMB account owners because so many do not know what's going on.

I think of small businesses who get the "You are not on the first page of Google" calls and pay small amounts of money for ad campaigns that mostly do nothing. It's an easy audience to confuse with a bit of babble. Very few senators are getting letters saying, "Please pass SB 2992," so if Google gets a small number of companies to write saying, "Please don't," it will be hard to get a 50+1 vote on it.

It was laughable to me with their size and revenue to do this via grassroots, especially via GMB owners.
