Water Cooler / Re: I almost missed HD Radio...
« on: January 06, 2017, 12:09:37 AM »
Australia has had DAB+ radio for some years now and many cars have it as standard. It repeats all the AM and FM stations and has many more digital-only stations. It's nice to have the clock in sync and to see the names of the songs on the radio display.

Agree about devices replacing features in cars. I have a Garmin GPS+dashcam that also has lane departure warning and forward collision warning.

Julia also seems to have left Facebook.

I like Link-Assistant.com's Rank Tracker. Use it daily.

Our member IrishWonder has written a great article at SEJ.

MajesticSEO has been one of my favorite tools for some time. Its value for site audits, competitive research, and a lot of other tasks is obvious in the world where Yahoo! no longer supports the linkdomain: operator, Google’s link: operator has never been showing more than only tiny bits of info, and our last hope, Blekko, switched to the paid model.

Meanwhile, as Google’s Penguin updates have shown even those who did buy into Google’s ages-old “nobody can hurt your site externally” mantra, links can be a very dangerous weapon.

Identifying bad links pointing at your site gets you half way to solving a possible problem. There is little you can do until you know what is going on. Truth be told, not all bad links are a product of a negative SEO campaign. Sometimes website owners / SEOs themselves can create troubles for their sites by not being careful enough and too greedy for easy links.

Do these ousted sites meet the inclusion criteria, e.g. must have multiple contributors, must look like a news publishing entity, constantly refreshed news, etc?

Traffic / Re: Value of PrWeb
« on: October 27, 2011, 09:00:14 AM »
I used PRWeb's premium service in 2006 and it's not in the SERPs today. I also submitted to about 25 free and very cheap PR sites and today only two of those remain in the SERPs:

  • 24-7pressrelease.com
  • newswiretoday.com

I have seen Google advertise for such raters in Australia some years ago.

Drastic, AdsSpy is up (but broken); gwebtools.com is down.

Added: AdsSpy is now Whorush.com.

Web Development / Heading level tags for nav links?

I am amazed at how many designers style navigation menus with heading tags - some even using multiple H1s. What do you think? Please vote and then discuss.

Don't bother making a Business profile yet on G+

You can sign up for their test program for Business profiles here: http://goo.gl/zq95C
I signed up already.

That URL no longer works - it was only for two weeks apparently  :(

Marketing / Re: QR codes and the web
« on: July 18, 2011, 04:58:26 AM »

I'm trying to get it, but I keep on thinking there is a lot more I'm missing. Everyone is using this thing in place of something I could have understood... and in most cases, a URL. So why not just put the URL? Why take out your phone and go through the hassle?

It's quicker to pull out the phone and start the QR code reader than to type in a long URL, since these usually point to a special landing page and not the home page. In Australia, my phone company doesn't include a reader with the iPhone they stock and I had to add it manually. This would be a barrier to adoption.

3-4 years ago a previous employer (Yellow Pages) had done a trial of placing the codes in shop windows and one of the issues was that glass interferes with proper reading of the code. I wasn't close to the trial but the people involved were put off that idea for good.

Marketing / Re: The name of a Facebook Page
« on: July 18, 2011, 04:43:39 AM »
Nothing so complicated.  In that example, I am Acme SEO (an agency) but I want to call my page "London SEO" because that is my money term.  In my limited testing of other people's pages, keyword-rich page titles in FB are not ranking in the top 10 unless the phrases also happen to be brands.

e.g. FB/SESconf has its full name as the page title and it ranks in the top 4 for the brand phrase.

BK, a lot of food for thought. The bank I consult to has a constant challenge of a low take-up of Internet banking (IIRC <50% but that's not an easy number to calculate, there being many products). In addition to the "old people who don't go online" demographic, there are younger people who are Internet savvy but just don't trust it with their banking.

Marketing / The name of a Facebook Page
« on: July 17, 2011, 12:27:40 AM »
I notice that many businesses are using their (future) custom URL name, e.g. brand name, as their Page name. Has anyone looked into using a keyword-rich page name (a phrase) but picking a brand name for the URL?

e.g. (fictitious) facebook.com/acme is the custom name but page title is "London SEO"

FWIW, I tried some searches and FB pages are not at the top for anything I checked.
