NYT says Snowden used a web crawler to snag info. They neglect to tell us which one. I'd be interested to know what software he used. (Could come in handy)

Chrome Bugs Allow Sites to Listen to Your Private Conversations

By exploiting bugs in Google Chrome, malicious sites can activate your microphone, and listen in on anything said around your computer, even after you’ve left those sites.

Even while not using your computer - conversations, meetings and phone calls next to your computer may be recorded and compromised.

Yikes! Glad I don't use Chrome anymore.

Google Destroys Rap Genius’ Search Rankings As Punishment For SEO Spam, But Resolution In Progress

"Google hit back hard today after it learned lyrics site Rap Genius had been using dubious SEO tricks to attain top spots in search results. Now RapGenius.com doesn’t appear on the first page of results for a search of “Rap Genius,” and popular queries like “Jay-Z Holy Grail Lyrics” don’t bring up the startup like they used to. [Update: But the two companies are working on a resolution.]"

Federal judge finds NSA phone spying likely unconstitutional

This looks like it is the first case to make it through the system on this issue. I'd expect more will make it through in the coming year.

The big question is still whether this will stand up to appeal and whether it will be able to make any difference.

Global Government Surveillance Reform

hmmmm..... Part of me says they could have prevented all this surveillance in the first place by simply taking security matters more seriously. The technology to thwart a lot of this has been available for years.

Hardware & Technology / SRWare Iron Controversy

I never knew there was any controversy about the SRWare Iron browser, but on the Wikipedia Talk Page there are some accusations. Whether the criticisms are legitimate or credible is still in question.

Would this sort of controversy affect your decision to use SRWare Iron?

Traffic / Do NoFollow links affect Google Custom Search (CSE)?
« on: October 02, 2013, 03:50:19 AM »
I have a new site with lots of outbound links to content that is on 3rd party domains (all under my control). This content will eventually be brought under the main domain (within a few months), so while the content is on different domains the idea was to use the rel="nofollow" link condom until the content is consolidated under the primary domain.

The site also uses the Google Custom Search engine. Even though the external links are NoFollow'ed we still want to index the content on the other sites for the on-site search engine. Will this NoFollow scheme mess things up for the local search?

Traffic / Language switching and SEO
« on: September 13, 2013, 08:50:23 AM »
I have a big Japanese site that I'm making in Typo3. It will also have Chinese and English versions. I'm trying to decide how to handle the language switching between them.

My original idea was to use the same URLs for each page in each site so, for example

However, there are many pages in Japanese that don't exist in the other languages. What would be better?

1) Link to the same page and show a 404 error if it doesn't exist.
2) Link to the same page and show Japanese content if it doesn't exist. (Header and footer will be the target language)
3) All language links simply link to the home page of the respective language.
