It was good.  Reminds me of something you would do RC.

>disposable systems

This isn't really nerdy enough, but my furnace motor died.  The "technician" (they don't call them repairmen anymore) recommended I replace the whole 20 yr old furnace but said he could try and find a replacement motor.  Long story short, he "found" a new replacement motor and the furnace works great.  Furnaces and hot water heaters sure do not last like they used to and are becoming as disposable as modern dishwashers.

In the future, we are going to see a lot of articles about rubber tire particulate pollution from these EV's.

>6,000 miles

We're down into the old bias ply territory here, but with tires that cost a heck of a lot more, just to haul around a whole lot of ugly.

A slightly different take:

BBC makes it sound like the Justice Dept. will have a hard time winning against Google, whereas this article makes it sound like Google has an uphill battle.  We shall see.

Get your popcorn.

Well it's only one unimportant site, but my little directory gets far more activity from bots than humans.  Oh, it gets a good bit of human activity too, but setting aside good bots, I'm up to my ears with junk bots, auto-submit spambots, scrapers and SEO bots.  That's just the directory, the blog gets deluged with comment spam bots.  Feh!

I don't know how good Gates was or would have been, but Ballmer was bad news for MS.

Traffic / Re: 5 Reasons Why I Prefer Website Versions Over Apps
« on: September 03, 2024, 12:45:12 AM »
I use as few apps as possible on my phone.  Most everything goes through the web browser (Vivaldi for Android) and that works real good for me.  But almost all the websites pester me trying to get me to download their app, which gives them more control and data about me.  MSN has gotten bad, I can only expand read about two articles on the mobile website.  After that to expand the article it will only do that with the app.  They really push that app but it's not happening.

Yeah, anything by Meta and Zukisoft.

Chrome too, because it's a Google spyware platform. (Although I use Vivaldi which uses the Chrome rendering engine soo...)

Good news for the Web, although the 'remedy' portion is coming up.  Change is coming.  Apple is dusting off it's contingency plans (I have seen more of Applebot lately.)

Water Cooler / Re: Back to the TV Antenna, Goodbye Cable
« on: July 25, 2024, 09:05:01 PM »
Sometime way before the pandemic, I quit watching TV (OTA or otherwise) and mainly got all my news from the Web.  But, pay walls and enshitification have pretty much degraded that experience online.  So I bought new batteries for the remote and turned on the TV and rescanned for current channels.

OTA TV has degraded too, at least that is what I found.  And lots of commercials, but I expected that and no worse than Youtube.

There still seems to be at least 2 movie channels playing classic movies.
There are 2 cartoon channels.
MeTV playing old TV shows like Gunsmoke, so cool.
Fox seems to have a weather channel.  I hate Fox but weather is weather, even though I mainly use apps on my phone.
The big plus is a totally new (to me) news channel, Scripps News, which does not appear to have an ax to grind.

Anyway, it's free and sometimes it's good to have a TV for background noise or breaking events.  That said, I don't think I'll use it much.
