https://www.cnet.com/news/facebooks-zuckerberg-says-employees-will-be-able-to-work-from-home-permanently/

BUT

Zuckerberg says employees moving out of Silicon Valley may face pay cuts
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/21/zuckerberg-50percent-of-facebook-employees-could-be-working-remotely.html

Zuck is correct that the current pay is partially determined by local cost-of-living, but this is not going to go over well with employees hoping to game the system by moving to a LCOL area.

On Reddit the other day was a warning that if you manage to convince your employer that you can do you job from home, with no loss of productivity, your job can be done from any country.

A cheaper country.

tbf timezones and cultural differences will take a toll

Looking at job ads over the years though for me, it does seem like "if you want London wages, go to London"- saying that from one of the lower paid parts of the UK. Wonder how the FB employees will react, is a part of it the 'prestige' of being a high dollar earner, in an 'elite' neighbourhood or is it about quality of life. Maybe a lot of these social barriers will start shifting the next 12/24 months.

Twitter, Shopify and now Facebook. The future is here. Some office buildings will need to be converted to residential. Movement of families away from cities?

Residential real estate buyers: "Does it have two offices?"

As an employer, it is a pretty good deal if you can off-load your property requirements, utilities, maintenance, taxes, security, & overhead to your employee.

They should stay at home.

There's no way on IT God's Earth that FB employees should be allowed out, in the wild, along with others, part of nature and other such phrases or places.

They should keep their data-stealing, lowest-common-denominator-algorithm-coding, marketing-101 arseholes out of the way of the rest of us.

Only online accountants are worse.

"Additionally, Zuckerberg said Facebook will begin allowing employees to request remote work across international borders."

Facebook extends its work-at-home policy to most employees

Will Work-from-Home Work Forever?
https://freakonomics.com/podcast/work-from-home/

Depending on who you ask and how their study was designed, WFH is either significantly more productive or significantly less productive.

The general guidance we have received so far for our US offices:

July - Monday-Thursday you can come into the office if you want if you are fully vaccinated

September - Work in the office 3 days a week and remote 2 days a week. But if you don't want to do that and your job doesn't require it you can work remote more than that.

There are a number of employees that have moved away from the office locations over the past year so of course those people (like myself) will be 100% remote.

I have talked to a number of contacts in the NYC area from large media companies and they aren't planning on being back in the office any time this year.

This is interesting...

WFH at one large Asian IT firm resulted in steady output, but that was achieved by working more hours. So productivity fell.

When the researchers dug into the data they found that focused work hours actually decreased, while meetings increased dramatically. So the result was lower productivity because, as we all know, most meetings are pointless and even the ones that are good are worthless for most of the people there.

Quote
Long-time readers may recall Bartleby’s law: 80% of the time of 80% of the people in meetings is wasted. This study certainly offers evidence for the proposition.

One possibility is that managers are less certain of their team’s commitment and are holding more meetings to check on them. Another is that managers call so many meetings to validate their own existence when they are not in the office. However, the academics suggest the greater need for meetings is the result of the greater difficulty of co-ordinating employees when they are working remotely—another hint that the process is inefficient. When working remotely, employees also spend less time being evaluated, trained and coached.

This matches my experience. I feel like when I work solo at work where everyone on the team is solid in their jobs and the process is familiar, working remotely with minimal interruption is quite a bit more productive. But when I am trying to learn something new and would benefit from mentoring, I feel like remote is way less efficient. Some things are just a lot easier for me to learn working shoulder to shoulder with someone and being able to watch.
