At least Noah Webster tried to get the English spelling to make sense here in the United States.  Unfortunately. my children are even less exposed to metric measurements than Gen X was.   Sometimes I think reason and logic are perceived as anti-American.

When I was in fourth grade, they told us that the US would likely be converting. Canada converted then and, being close to the border, a lot of the speed limit signs got doubled up with both mph and kph.

I think by the time your kids came along, it was clear that was not happening.

>fourth grade
Whats that in metric? hhh   Yea, same here or there abouts.  Except, when I first learned about metric, temp. was referred to as 'Centigrade' instead of Celsius.  Old text books.  Took me years to get the memo.

>converting
I remember a guy who bought a Ford Mustang II.  His complaint, in his words, was the car was half metric and half 'American', so you had to have two sets of wrenches and sockets out and he was always grabbing the wrong one.  If that was true, that half-half stuff didn't help with public acceptance.  I'm guessing today all American cars (since the demise of AMC who were still using stuff from the old Rambler parts bin until the end,) are all metric.

>speed limit signs

Distance signs too on the Interstate Hwy's.  For awhile you would see signs to the next big city in both miles and kilometers.  Never took and after 20 years of weathering the signs didn't get replaced.

I can see why Americans never took to a foreign measurement like metric, during the 1980's and 90's people were all terrified that black United Nations helicopters filled with foreigners were going to appear and declare parts of American soil World Heritage Sites.

My uncle, who was otherwise a rational engineer and son of an engineer, was convinced that it was all just a plot to confuse people so the oil companies could raise gas prices without people noticing because they couldn’t do the conversion.

Even in the US, the 3d Printer-CNC world is dominated by metrics.  I like working with mm on existing models but when designing a model from scratch I can't conceptualize in mm.

BTW... my only intention was to give people a good laugh. I thought this was pretty funny.

And actually, maybe the funniest line for me was:
Black soldier: "What about freedom for all people?"
Washington: "What about temperature you ask?"

Understood and you succeeded.  Thank you.  The discussion just brought up a lot of old memories.

>conceptualize

Same here.  I can conceptualize a mile or tenths of a mile but not a kilometer.  And it ain't going to go away, our whole Jeffersonian Grid system of measuring land acreage (and where to put a road) is plotted and platted in miles.

Weights are even harder for me, I can sort of judge a pound in my hand but not a kilogram.

So old ways die hard, ask the British, they still measure their own weight in Stones and they all seem to understand it.  Stubborn and/or they do it just to irritate the French and the EU.  hhh

Absolutely. I can back that up.

I take weights of customers.... always in Stones.

I love the mix, often gives out smiles.

It does bring on another issue, and thats dual Language. This is a pet hate of mine. When we go to wales, all the road signs are in Welsh.  With English below. Well for 100% of the people driving, English is understood.  But Welsh is only spoken by 30% of of POPULATION.  So a smaller % of drivers.

It takes me time to read down the welsh and get to the English....  Its a safety hazard!  I tell folk but they never listen :)

OK rant over and thread effectively stolen.

Back to the US... I guess the point is its not only you who are nuts.  :P
