Ford stock rises as orders for F-150 Lightning EV come in
« on: May 22, 2021, 03:24:28 AM »

Lots of chatter about the Lightning - 20,000 pre-orders, but that's a lot less than for the Tesla assault truck, but part of that is because of Tesla's direct-to-consumer approach. Still, a nice start for an electric truck from a mainstream manufacturer. The $40,000 price tag is not bad.

I have a lot of concerns about the major auto manufacturers trying to move into EVs --my primary worry is about firmware.  With the added complexity of firmware issues, the vehicle may stay in the shop as much as it is on the road.

I am also very uncomfortable with the idea of vehicles constantly phoning home, but I think that's going to be a problem across the entire EV manufacturing spectrum.

It's a consern with any computer controlled vehicle that could override basic functions  -- ICE or electric.  A few years back Chrisler was making news because their cars were getting wirelessly hacked and shut down.

I like the idea (but not the price) of the drop-in EV crate motor/battery systems.  ...But then I won't get rural L5 autonav.

Good job on keeping the starting at price below $40K. That makes for nice ads, even if they send very few of them to actual dealers.

"Ford went the extra mile in taking a lot of the guesswork out of towing, enabling owners to create a profile based on the object being towed. In the case of the 8,000-pound boat, I could see that the added weight would shave almost 100 miles off my range, from 250 miles on a full charge to 161.7 miles."

ok, now I'm interested!!

The real standout charging feature is exclusive to the extended range versions: Ford is selling a new 80-amp home charging station that not only fully charges the F-150 Lightning in eight hours but allows owners to easily power their entire home for around three days

That 8 hour charger got my attention.

That's the EV future we need. That starts to significantly change grid resilience if you have a few million of those connected to a smart meter that can buy and sell power and an inverter that can switch to battery when rates/demand is high.

80 amps is a lot and I suspect a lot of houses would need an expensive upgrade to their electrical service to supply that much juice, but the charger can be downgraded (de-rated) to 20 amps and still run at 40 amps (9.6kw) in reverse to power your house.

I want one (or something with those features... probably not a truck though. My current truck goes less than 3,000 miles per year).

What's the annual $ubscription going to be?

>80 amps

I set up dual 200 amp outside panelboards that feed dual 200 amp distribution interior panelboards, each with its own main breaker. Bring it on!    You are right, many with not be able to add an 80 amp circuit.

So you have a 400-amp service from the transformer to your house? You might be able to run two charging stations ;-)

Yeah, and the 350-foot underground cable between the transformer and the meter is massively oversized --750 mcm.  There are advantages to having NON-union utilities linemen as members of your good-ol-boy network.

Way cool.  RC you can have both the VW mini-van and an F-150 EV at the same time.

Realistically, I think two 48-amp Type 2 chargers will handle all of our charging needs but I'm watching how the backfeeding emergency power to the house will shake out.  I think I could get by on 80-amps even running the geo-thermal heat pump and its well pump but it would take some load management.
