I actually do think of this. Given that we have little to no cell signal, no big power lines and no above-ground power lines, I figure my exposure is less than most Americans.

But I sometimes ponder that we DO get radio and TV and Starlink and occasional cell signals not to mention home wifi and all that. We are doing a massive population-level experiment. Most of this is very low energy, of course, but some isn't and...

It was found that children living in homes as far as 600 m from power lines had an elevated risk of leukemia. An increased risk of 69% for leukemia was found for children living within 200 m of power lines while an increased risk of 23% was found for children living within 200 to 600 m of the lines.

Now how much power is in a high-tension line? I'm not sure. Normally for a point source, energy (heat, sound, light, EM) decreases as a cube of distance as it expands to fill a sphere. With power lines, I guess it must be a square of distance. So 200m away would be mean a 40,000-fold decrease compared to 1m away, like you might experience if charging your car. The biggest lines run at 3GW. So 3GW at 200m is the equivalent of 76.5kw at 1m.

I'm not an electrical engineer and those are limit cases using what is purported to be the highest energy lines in the world. Still...

>How much power

"A farmer in Idaho had a barn located near high power lines and noticed that baling wire he kept in his barn was conducting small amounts of electricity. After some investigation he built  induction coils and began to run his house off of it. Power company equipment detected the drain of energy and went to investigate. The farmer was arrested for using electricity from the power company without a meter.

In another case, an engineer living at a military base in England lived in a house near a radar installation. He installed induction coils in his attic that generated electricity from the radar beam. Controllers in the radar facility noticed a strange shadow on their screens and he was caught."

I remember the news stories when the farmer was busted.

Induction scares me.

>> farmer

It seems like maybe a reasonable cost for the ability to pollute his space.

But, like most things in our economy, we privatize profit and socialize costs/externalities.

>>>farmer

Seems to me, broadcasting electric power is like broadcasting radio, the airwaves are owned by the public so if somebody intercepts radio signal you can't complain.  It's not like the farmer ran a wire to the utility pole and stole the power.

I'm thinking the courts did not agree.

>Seems to me

IIRC, that was the general sentiment among the public.

>courts

Big utility companies have better lawyers and lobbyists than the general public.

'Vampire drone' can leech electricity from power lines to live forever

Debbie: Sooo, they could launch an assassin drone fitted out with the leeching feature in Ukraine and have it follow power lines to the Kremlin.

That's wild, and makes total sense.
