Standard Notes
« on: May 13, 2018, 11:09:26 PM »
Heard about this for the first time today when it got mentioned in relation to Google allowing Linux apps to run on Chromebooks.

https://standardnotes.org/

The more I read about it the more merit I see.  Looks like it will run on any OS.

I like this

this less so

I often use Evernote to save documents that have images.

I just downloaded the Mac desktop version.

I'll have to use it for a while to know what I think.

Buckworks I will be interested to know what you think.

I've been using Simplenotes from Automatic and it works for me. But I like the idea of the data being readable long into the future.

I worry about lock-in with Evernote. It's convenient, but really not easily transferable and it has gotten to be kind of a beast... it takes longer to open the app than Word or Excel, but not as long as Illustrator or InDesign. But for simple notekeeping, it's too much.

But I do like to be able to add images and drag PDFs. For example, I changed all the doors on the house to keyless locks, took photos of the master codes and add them to a "House" folder in Evernote. Or I get PDFs of appliance manuals and drag them into the "Appliances" note in the "House" notebook. It's probably not the best way to store things, but it's convenient.

That does look pretty slick and no limit on the number of devices. I'm doing the migration now to give it a try.

Ultimately, same disadvantage as Evernote vis-a-vis Standard Notes though. And I really like Standard Notes philosophy - don't build features that are hard to support, "the best upgrade is the one you never have to do," etc... I would just have to think about how I organize things with text in one place and documents in another.

And to be clear, Evernote works fine for me. I just worry about having data in there that only works with Evernote. Since it's stored locally and the app is local, it's not that big a worry. But if MS stops producing Word, you know that you will be able to convert your documents to Open Office or Zoho or GSuite. But Evernote is a little more worrisome. So it's worth checking out Zoho Notebook just to see if the migration works smoothly.... just in case.

Thanks!

If nothing else, use two: Zoho for pics and media, and Standard notes for text, outlines and stuff.

Microsoft Notes is another powerful note app with cloud backup and sync.  It just seemed too complicated.

I think I'm going to stick with Evernote for now.

Before Evernote and any of that stuff, I used Microsoft OneNote a little bit, but never took to it. Clunky at the time.

Zoho Notebook migration worked well at the note level and the individual notes that I checked all looked great. But it did not carry over any of the organization. So page speed audit results is next to door lock codes is next to invoice processing instructions etc. I think Zoho Notebook would be a perfectly good replacement to Evernote, but not so good I would reorganize my notes. Also, no Windows desktop client.

>>Zoho for pics and media, and Standard notes for text

I could use pCloud (Dropbox, Google Drive competitor) for all the documents and pics. The situation where I find Evernote really useful is, for example, the page speed audit mentioned above. I can intersperse my notes with screenshots, essentially getting what amounts to a web page that is accessible both locally and through an obfuscated URL. It's dead simple to just do a screen grab and paste it in without even saving the image file somewhere. Then keep typing and pasting as needed.

I suppose I could simple create web pages and then have pCloud just sync them to all devices.

I guess people like me are the reason that Evernote has experienced so much feature creep and is becoming an unwieldy beast. Everyone has "just a couple" features they want, but everyone's couple of features are different.
