Web Development / PageSpeed Insights / Lighthouse checker
« on: April 13, 2023, 01:09:27 PM »
I'm looking for a website that offers automated PageSpeed Insights and speed reporting. I'd like to be able to:

  • generate reports showing performance over time
  • compare a handful of key pages on a few different sites
  • show the impact of bandwidth throttling
  • be able to run the reports from different locations (UK, US, mainland Europe etc.)
  • (ideally) be able to access the testing location IPs, so I can whitelist them for testing local/dev sites and blacklist them for analytics

There's an awful lot of choice - https://www.uptrends.com/ , https://www.webpagetest.org/ , https://gtmetrix.com/ etc. Has anyone done the legwork already? Any recommendations?

Web Development / Old CSS, new CSS

I first got into web design/development in the late 90s, and only as I type this sentence do I realize how long ago that was.

And boy, it was horrendous. I mean, being able to make stuff and put it online where other people could see it was pretty slick, but we did not have very much to work with.

Water Cooler / Bundling options by default (EU law)
« on: November 30, 2018, 11:09:44 AM »
I'm looking for case law and/or examples of pre-ticking options/accessories/services in shopping carts. I was under the impression that doing so was illegal in the EU, but want to be able to cite some sources one way or another. Can anyone offer any information?

Traffic / SVG inside a heading element
« on: May 02, 2018, 09:24:12 AM »
If I use an SVG text element inside an <h1>. E.g.:

I believe the text is spidered by Googlebot. Does it carry the semantic weight of the <h1>?

Traffic / 301s or canonicals?
« on: August 03, 2016, 12:47:16 PM »
If I have three URLs my homepage can be accessed by:

https://myurl/
https://myurl/?parameter=one
https://myurl/?parameter=two

a canonical element of https://myurl/ would prevent duplicate issues. In the days before canonical elements, I'd 301 https://myurl/?parameter=one and https://myurl/?parameter=two to https://myurl/ to fix this, optionally writing the values of parameter into the page source to be picked up by analytics. Would this now be considered bad practice?

Marketing / Dashboards for Google Analytics
« on: March 04, 2016, 12:05:20 PM »
Does anyone have any experience or recommendations around dashboard apps for aggregating various Google Analytics and other data? E.g. dashthis.com

The in-built GA dashboard functionality is proving quite limiting.

Water Cooler / Source of quote?

An old adage: If you want something to stay private, don't put in on the internet

Anyone know where this sentiment originated? I'd like to be able to quote the source.

Web Development / PCI compliance changes
« on: April 27, 2015, 04:14:09 PM »
Earlier this month, the PCI Security Standards Council published an update (PCI DSS v3.1), deprecating TLS 1.0. The date for compliance is 30 June 2016. For new implementations, it's effective immediately. As I understand it, this means no taking card payments using this protocol and the earlier SSL protocols.

https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/security_standards/documents.php?agreements=pcidss&association=pcidss

From what I can see, this update will block:

Android <= 4.3
IE 7-10 (so that'd be all IEs on Windows XP)
Java 6 & 7
OS X Safari < 7.1

all of which max out at TLS 1.0 by default (I think). I believe it is possible to get some older IEs to support later versions, but I don't think MS have pushed the change.

Am I reading this correctly? Does anyone have any insight?

Marketing / Email service provider recommendations
« on: December 29, 2014, 11:24:50 AM »
I'm looking for an email service provider to handle booking confirmation and abandoned cart emails. So at the moment, 100% triggered and no mass mailings. This is primarily about maximizing deliverability.

Requirements are:

. To be able to securely post recipient and email body content to the email templates.
. No barriers to producing responsive emails.
. Sending from my own subdomain.

Looking professional is key. Low cost would be a huge bonus! Any suggestions?

Marketing / DoubleClick Floodlight & Universal Analytics Display
« on: December 29, 2014, 10:07:27 AM »
I'm trying to get up to speed with how DoubleClick/Google manages display advertising. DoubleClick has its Floodlight tag, but Google Universal Analytics now supports display:

https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2444872?hl=en-GB

. Is there an overlap in functionality here?
. Does the Analytics tag supercede the DoubleClick one?

I've inherited a website smothered in third-party JavaScript libraries, so I'm looking to do a little pruning!

Water Cooler / Windows' European browser ballot ends
« on: December 18, 2014, 05:25:14 PM »
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30501518

In 2009, Microsoft was forced to offer users download links to third-party web browsers. Now, after five year it's ended, and the European Commission have declared it a success. Does anyone know if IE's decline in Europe has been more rapid that the rest of the world?

Traffic / Google may increase pressure to move to HTTPS

Google considers warning internet users about data risks

Google is proposing to warn people their data is at risk every time they visit websites that do not use the "HTTPS" system.

Typically passive aggressive, but it's clear that Google want everyone to invest in SSL certificates.

Hardware & Technology / Syncing bookmark
« on: September 05, 2014, 01:32:41 PM »
I'm currently syncing Firefox bookmarks on three Windows 7 PCs and Dolphin bookmarks on two Android devices using the Dolphin Connect plugin for Firefox. This *may* work for two devices, but it gets horribly out of shape for me.

For email/calendar/contacts/tasks I'm using SOGo on top of Dovecot, and it work fantastically. Has anyone got an alternative solution for syncing bookmarks that:

  • Isn't subscription-based (e.g. Xmarks)
  • Works cross-browser (Firefox and Dolphin being critical)
  • Doesn't share everything with Google
  • Host my own or a web service?

Water Cooler / Hacker Gary McKinnon turns into a search expert

Hacker Gary McKinnon turns into a search expert

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28524909

Quote
Gary McKinnon, the computer hacker who was the subject of a 10-year legal battle over US extradition, has reinvented himself as a search expert.

Mr McKinnon launched Small SEO, a site where he charges £40 an hour to help businesses get mentioned in search results.

Quote
The US authorities tried to extradite Mr McKinnon to face charges of causing $800,000 (£471,000) worth of damage to military computer systems and he would have faced up to 60 years in prison if convicted. Mr McKinnon said he was looking for evidence of UFOs.

US authorities at the time described Glasgow-born Mr McKinnon's actions as the "biggest military computer hack of all time"

That's some impressive commitment to link baiting.
