Water Cooler / Re: CoreCommit to Exercise - Round 5: Oct 29 to Dec 30

I have been off the planet for a couple of weeks with back to back illnesses.  Looks like I am too late to join this round.  Any objections if I still log my tally anyway.  This thread keeps me going.

I am currently reading The Chimp Paradox by Dr Steve Peters (Team GB & Sky Pro-cycling).  I picked it up as part of learning more about the organisation and systems of Team Sky.

I didn't really know what to expect, but this is not only eye opening, but very useful.

Hardware & Technology / Re: PC Sales Slump as Kids Say No to Computers

4 kids here, 1 laptop (current), 1 desktop (asked for), 1 android tablet (asked for), 1 happy to use family desktop

My son has been on at me to get him a desktop for Christmas.  I thought he would rather have a laptop, but he doesn't.  So, the Christmas holiday project is to build one.  I have not done that for a while and he will get to learn something.  It might also cover his holiday homewor, and be a great excuse to miss eastenders and all the other crap on TV  ;)

Yes, I agree locking blade is a safety feature.  I have a lock knife in the house, but can't take it outside.

However, my kubotan is very legal and makes a lovely keyring.

Water Cooler / Pocket Knife / Penknife
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:07:48 PM »
Having not carried a pocket knife since I was a kid, I got talking to a friend a few weeks back who challenged me to borrow one and see just how much I used it for a few weeks.

Just to be clear, I have no interest in a knife as a weapon. I am British (what what) and don't feel the need (sorry db, I love ya  ;) )

I took up the challenge borrowing a basic Wenger Swiss Army knife (I had a Victorinox when I was a kid...it got stolen).  I didn't think I would use it at all, but I have, almost every day. As a Dad there seems to be endless times that you need a screwdriver, oh and bottle opener  ;)

Anyway, I have given it back now and with Christmas coming , I thought it would make a great gift for the family to get me.  I wondered if anyone else here had one, or a mult-itool, and what they thought of it?

Of course, it has to be UK legal, non-locking, under 3 inches blah blah (sorry db  ;) )

Water Cooler / Re: How to manage people effectively...

I have read plenty ( 5 minute manager probably being the best), but frankly there is nothing like jumping in because you just never know what will be coming your way.

What are you up to?

Edit: It was 'The One Minute Manager'......I just take four minutes longer.....

Landscape.  I only use portrait if I am typing and want to see what I have written.

Yeah, but....  how are you going to monetize that? Text ads?  And, from a near-term perspective, isn't much most of that demographic worthless from a marketing perspective?

I think the money there is long term.  Build the market now for when smart-phones arrive.

That looks like great fun!  I am sure the reality is a bit different though.

I didn't know about the FB zero stuff.  Great idea.  They should talk about it more, which may well drive the share price up again.

Traffic / Re: Mayer to Announce Yahoo Strategy
« on: September 26, 2012, 08:24:02 PM »
Mayer said that Yahoo will do more "acqui-hires," where it buys small companies not for their products, but for their engineering talent.

I am not expert, and have not followed that closely, but isn't this exactly what they have done historically?
