Hardware & Technology / APP: Siri
« on: November 13, 2010, 02:23:22 PM »
Virtual assistant.  Rec'd generally good reviews in the tech journals I read.  Currently free.  Iphone only, probably forever that way since Apple bought the developer.

Water Cooler / Businessweek 1995: The Internet? Bah!
« on: November 12, 2010, 06:44:47 PM »
Caution: You've entered a time warp.

We're promised instant catalog shopping—just point and click for great deals. We'll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month?

Have fun with this one.

Monetization / Newspaper paywalls aren't going to work.

Clay Shirky vs The Times' Paywall and Newsletter Economics.

Great read.

A thought for th3core and its eventual monetization: "One way to escape a commodity market is to offer something that isn’t a commodity."   Easy to say, hard to do.

Water Cooler / The Toy Will Win Principle
« on: November 06, 2010, 06:20:42 PM »
"Toy [noun]: A technological product which is simple and fun to use, and which may be criticized by some people as being weak and not suitable for serious work."

(BTW, this is closely related to Ugly Sells.)

"On the other end of the spectrum we have 'enterprise products.' While toys take pride in how small, fun, and cool they are, enterprise products take pride in how big and serious they are."

Traffic / Google Product Search
« on: November 05, 2010, 06:45:09 PM »
"Google Inc. is upgrading its shopping site as it steps up efforts to compete in Web comparison shopping, a move to become a key player in a market dominated by sites like Amazon.com Inc. and eBay Inc."

"...adding features to its separate service for shoppers, Google Product Search, that, among other things, will make it easier for users to look for soft goods like clothes"

"The image-recognition technology used to deliver those features for the Google shopping service comes from Like.com, a comparison-shopping site Google purchased in August that has a 'visual search' feature."

Sounds like Google Place Search except for products.

Hardware & Technology / Logitech Revue
« on: November 05, 2010, 05:49:12 PM »
My son-in-law installed/demo'd this on my media center/home office network. For me, it didn't add much functionality as I have the rooms hardwired with usb & network jacks where needed, so a full keyboard and trackball is readily available.  However, what did make me pay attention was the app that was available for the iPhone (android, too??) that essentially bypassed the keyboard and put the Iphone in command of everything.

US only, I'm guessing.

Hardware & Technology / Archos - 8GB Touch Tablet - ANDROID + Wi-Fi
« on: November 05, 2010, 02:39:41 PM »
Not an Ipad, but not an Ipod either.  At $145, it's a throw-away.  There are cheaper android tablets out there, Walgreens recently had one for $99. BUT it was an earlier version of android and supposedly couldn't be upgraded.  This one is Android 2.1 Eclair (upgradable to Android 2.2 Froyo when released).

"The global online survey showed that people who received news content from a friend or associate via social media, were 19% more likely to recommend the brand that advertised around that story to others and 27% more likely to favour that brand themselves." (emphasis mine)

Huh!?  I wouldn't have thought the peripheral advertisers would pick up much status unless their brand was generally and positively associated with the topic of the story.

Monetization / US homeownership at lowest level in a decade
« on: November 02, 2010, 02:50:50 PM »
Probably the same trend in EU, though home ownership percentages were likely lower.

I've been wondering if aff programs for decor and home-related items have lost ground as well. I can see that maintenance items might have actually gotten stronger but what about straight decor items? I'd think that they would have been hit really hard.
