Economics & Investing / Re: Groupon IPO $15-25Billion!

Their sales are said to be on target for around $2 Billion this fiscal year, seems that they have picked the right time to IPO - their growth has to plateau soon.

Best time to sell assets is during their boom, before they're bust. :)

Think we'll see the FTSE 100 try and maintain suport around the 5000 mark at present, but will fall lower over the coming months. There is just no good economic news, and plenty for the markets to panic about.

nope, but Dave @purecontent is a good guy to sort out Google News issues if you've hit a brick wall.

Gurtie, you think a cold approach to him would be fine?

Seriously considering dropping some cash on stocks again as they have never been cheaper.

Same here - BUT with the caveat of waiting for what looks like a bottom, or near enough. Nothing worse than investing only to see it tank.

At present I figure the FTSE 100 will spend the next few months moving down towards 4500 then 3500 again.

Traffic / Contacting Google quality team?
« on: August 09, 2011, 08:04:55 PM »
One of my big mainstream sites has been kicked out from Google News.

I presumed there wasn't enough extra info on the site so put it through redevelopment, expanded the team on it, and reapplied for inclusion - but was stunned to receive an email stating that the site "violated Google's quality guidelines" and therefore cannot be included.

When I sent a follow up email asking what the issue was, Google refused to say. I have no idea what the problem is - this is supposed to be a nice clean site - and it's my biggest earning site, so obviously I'm keen to try and address any perceived issue.

I need a way to be able to talk with Google about this, however, Google have obviously put up a brick wall.

Anyone know anyone on the inside who could possibly help, please?

Monetization / Re: Yahoo Publisher Network

YPN closed for regular publishers some time ago. Then only kept their huge corporate level publishers. Don't know anything about sub-publisher deals.

That sounds like typical Yahoo - you'd almost think Google were paying Yahoo to kill themselves.

You can try http://www.inuvo.com/

Cheers, will check it out.

Google are peeing me off so I've finally decided to try and wean myself from Google dependency - that means killing Google Analytics and finding an alternative to Adsense.

Periodically I receive emails from one company or other offering YPN ads for use, but my cynicism suspects being royally ripped off by these people.

In which case, my questions are:

1. Are there any decent companies to run YPN ads through if not able to sign up directly with Yahoo?
2. Is there a relatively simple and painless way to register for YPN contextual advertising?

Should have put them onto a few Simon's Cat on Youtube after. :)

Marketing / Re: Bottom Feeders to take mySpace
« on: August 06, 2011, 08:34:21 PM »
I'd say the terrible design of myspace pages had an influence. Animated gifs, auto-play music and vids, 1+ mb page sizes, etc.

Though at the price I'll gladly be considered a bottom feeder.

Agree here - the ability for users to completely customise their pages was a killer. Friends just didn;t get "page load times" and pushed on "images and videos for all!".

Still, there's got to be some publishing revenue in the site even with normal content - a proper content publishing strategy with news and features I should imagine should work well in leveraging the domain weight.

Monetization / Re: Retargeting Ads
« on: August 06, 2011, 08:31:02 PM »
As a publisher consider this an absolutely awful development - makes a complete mockery of being strong in a niche, especially when the clicks used to pay well - as now CTR has gone right down and the ads are often for lower paying niches.

As a user, what I find especially frustrating is when I visit a website for research and end up with their ads following me everywhere - or even worse, I've already bought, but the ads still follow.

There was one recently in Oxford, UK - not been to one, but had a rep call to provide optimisation tips.

Once I'd had a rant at them about Google's complete lack of support - Google like talking at people, but despise having to talk with people - the rep actually provided some useful tips.

I'd be impressed if chrome was entirely free of patent disputes, but what I find somewhat surprising is that rather than go after Google for patent violation, Apple was targeting HTC and trying to block sales of their products.

Lots of good UK hosts - personal favourite would probably be Clook, though: http://www.clook.co.uk/

Focused on being reliable rather than being the cheapest, and been with them for years.

For "How to create content that does this!" you forgot to add:

ensure you have quality writers in the first place

I was going to type "no Indians" but recently I've been taking on UK freelance journos who quote national papers on their resume, but I find their work quite poor and over-priced. Luckily, in that sort of arrangement, you only pay for what you use, and easy to reject what's not suitable.
