Web Development / Use links in subheadings?
« on: March 02, 2019, 03:55:27 PM »
I'm helping with a freelance writing project, in which articles evaluate products from third-party websites. Each product has its own subheading and section, with direct links to the third-party products in the headings.

ie,

1. Google

Some text all about Google!

I find this odd. From an old-skool perspective, I want to push on a standard document structure, ie, where subheadings are just subheadings in a h tag.

Additionally, I'd rather list references to subheadings on a page using a name properties, like might be found on Wikipedia page, where the opening of the page lists subheadings by links which a user can quickly click through to.

However, is this just me being old-fashioned? Is there really going to be SEO value in adding links to subheadings? Or is there more SEO value in following the old document strategy? Or is it the case that neither really matters any more, because of the rise in semantics and user tracking?

Would just like to get some second opinions on this. :)

Marketing / Twitter marketing stats?
« on: May 20, 2013, 07:00:06 PM »
So I've finally begun to explore Twitter, and followed how information content is acted up.

And so far, I'm seeing response rates as pitiful.

I had a Tweet retweeted in front of about 20K people to a forum thread, and saw about 200 actual clickthroughs from this.

I'm finding similar on other information content being linked to from other people.

My impression so far is that Twitter is basically acting like an email list - but that most of the emails are so full of crap most followers have long fatigued from caring from such notices.

I figure, by analogy, if you are on an email list that sends you 10 emails a day, mostly chatter about what they're having for lunch and similar banality, how long would you pay attention to that?

I'm basically wondering if I'm coming out on the overly-cynical side of this, or whether Twitter has some kind of proven CTA statistics based on normal use (as a follower) as opposed to special offers (promoted Tweets).

Traffic / Google tries to hide UK results - again
« on: November 22, 2012, 01:24:24 PM »
Looks like Google are back to trying to denigrate the UK user experience, by hiding the link to UK results in a drop down menu - therefore subjecting most of us to good old US results, headed by Wikipedia.

Screenshot attached.

Dear Google: just because you're confident about your IP targeting, doesn't make it relevant to your users!! Your general UK IP targeting for local search is extremely poor, too, k, thanks.

EDIT: Oh, looks like I can't add attachments. And the post goes into something of a loop if you try and post one as you can't edit the attachments box, and you can post because there's a URL there.

Traffic / Dear Google: the iPod is not an iPhone
« on: October 09, 2012, 11:57:53 AM »
Whenever I search for news on the iPod 5th generation, Google keeps giving me stories on the iPhone instead:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&cr=countryUK|countryGB&biw=1600&bih=750&tbs=ctr%3AcountryUK|countryGB&q=ipod+release+date&oq=ipod+release+date&gs_l=serp.3..0i7l9j0.50678.50844.0.51131.2.2.0.0.0.0.103.202.1j1.2.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.odnHP7u_DJg

Think that pretty much sums Google up at present.

Bing, meanwhile, seems to know the difference:

Web Development / Google Plus profile to show in SERPs?

I'm curious - how do you associate content you produce so that your profile pic for your Google Plus account shows up in the SERPs?

Web Development / Google News adds custom meta keywords tag

Quite interesting:

Now just got to figure how to implement this in Wordpress - just been trying a few attempts to populate this automatically with tags and categories outside the loop, but not succeeded so far.

Hardware & Technology / Encryption programs?
« on: August 09, 2012, 02:27:03 PM »
Am looking to start using a Lacie Cloudbox to save to the Cloud, but figured it would be a wise precaution to ensure everything uploaded there is encrypted first.

Anyone have any recommendations on encryption programs? Am currently using Windows 7.

Web Development / 123-reg login issues
« on: August 09, 2012, 02:24:47 PM »
Anyone else able to login with 123-reg at the moment?

Currently unable to login to my main account with my username/password combo.

Clicked on "forgot password" but nothing come through via email, but might have changed, causing additional problems.

Noticed they have a new login URL - used to be /secure/ but now it's /public/login/

I've got some strong established sites, specifically in general finance, property, insurance, and banking, and know I'm under monetising them.

I feel very bogged down with work at present though, not least because I'm pushing on expanding into a retail niche.

Therefore is there anyone in finance lead generation (mortgages, insurance, property sales, etc etc) who would be interested in talking about a possible team up on a revenue share basis, where I provide the assets and they provide the means of monetisation?

Am not looking for basic affiliate agreements or for SEO purposes - am thinking specifically about lead generation, and how to use for best effect.

Anyone wants to PM for further details of the sites, you're welcome to.

Marketing / New Google+ ads?
« on: July 07, 2012, 12:03:03 PM »
Just searched for "FT.com", and instead of Adwords on the right, I see a big profile for the FT's Google+ page:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=ft.com&oq=ft.com&gs_l=hp.3..0l10.927.1764.0.2044.6.3.0.3.3.0.89.126.3.3.0...0.0.F52EskSLubQ

Not seen this before, but I figure this sort of thing must have been around for a time?

Water Cooler / Slow internet tonight?
« on: June 28, 2012, 11:22:38 PM »
Not sure if it's my local connection of a routing issue, but am finding the net to be very slow, and Google won't even load up for me. Or Youtube. Pages with Adsense are dragggggggging and only eventually display sans Adsense.

I'd be tempted to think that Google or Akamai might be under DDoS attack tonight - but Alertra shows Google.co.uk should be up fine.

If this is a routing issue, it's one helluva stinker by BT.

I would just how local it is?

EDIT: I can get Amazon. But not Facebook. Or even Bing. Even th3core is slow, but it loads - the others do not.

Monetization / Google Products listing requires Adwords campaign?
« on: June 28, 2012, 07:43:59 PM »
So I've set up a merchant centre account, submitted a products feed - and then today, see the following message:

Quote
To keep your Product Search listings active on Google, you'll need to set up a Product Listing Ads campaign in Google AdWords (feeds targeting US only).
We're launching a new experience soon. Learn more
Set up your campaign today and you may be eligible to receive $100 of credit. Learn more

So ... while it's US only at present, this means Google is pushing for Products to be nothing more than a repository of paid adverts?

Another hammer blow against user experience I guess - I actually used to use Google Base for shopping.

And now I'm a merchant, I'll need to pay to use it ....

Did I miss a meeting about all this somewhere?
