Water Cooler / Report: Banks to be less profitable

Accountancy: Rising Regulation to Cut Bank Profitability
http://www.accountancymagazine.com/croner/jsp/Editorial.do?channelId=-305535&contentId=1732340

To me this means the banks are not going to lend money any time soon. I expect very slow economic recovery for bricks n mortar.  Will that actually help online sales?

Water Cooler / Re: Your experience with US telecoms?
« on: November 28, 2010, 07:01:44 PM »
>>US Cellular

Actually has an Android phone, at least in the Chicagoland market.  All their plans have a 5GB data cap.  Don't know how fast their 3G pipes are tho.

>>T-Mobile

I had the same conclusion, that they would probably be about as good as ATT. My neighbor likes them but that is a pretty small data set. Heh.  Looked at Twitter for "tmobile" last night and today: lots of negativity.  T-Mobile would be cheaper then ATT or Verizon plus they even have no contract plans if you want to pay full price for your phone.

>>Verizon
Coverage around here is better than ATT.  With current plans it looks like it will cost me more than ATT.  Twitter: everyone talking about iphone arrival.  ::)

>>Sprint
At times Spotty coverage locally.  No sign they are even interested in iPhone. Twitter: quiet

Darkest Iowa Test:

Using the coverage maps I went to a small town I know in western Iowa which is about 30 miles from nearest interstate.  All corn and soybeans. Only Verizon claims to have both voice and 3G data there.  Rest: maybe roaming partner for voice. Data: don't hold your breath.

Still all that is on paper, nice to find real world experience.

If you're often out in the rural areas, add US Cellular to your research list, Brad.

What are your personal requirements for the handset?  That's the big delimiter for many now.

I've only heard good things about US Cellular around here.  Not one bad comment, but all the people I've talked too are voice and text only on that carrier.

I currently have an iPhone. Like it and hope to stick with it.  I suspect when Apple breaks their exclusive with ATT it won't just be Verizon that gets the iPhone - that's speculative but T-Mobile seems willing ... hence the research.  I've not had too bad an experience with ATT locally, some dropped calls, some dead spots.

So for handset, either an iPhone or Android.  I don't use voice much but when you need it you need it. Text moderate, data alot.

Water Cooler / Your experience with US telecoms?
« on: November 28, 2010, 02:16:50 PM »
I'm starting my research early, my ATT smartphone contract won't come up until June but I'm trying to get a feel for the other telecom companies in the US.  I have been unable to travel for the last 4 years so I could not really test my cellphone and data reception outside of my little patch.

So for the American users here: how has been your experience with your telecom carrier: Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon or ATT both with data and voice? Also how has the company been to deal with for support, billing etc.?

Traffic / Re: Homeland Security Seizes Torrent Search Engine Domain

Jason, it appears that the owner of the domain was never served with a court order, nor was Godaddy.  However the article seems to indicate the gov't got a court order prior to seizure.

Traffic / Homeland Security Seizes Torrent Search Engine Domain
« on: November 27, 2010, 01:06:38 PM »
The gist of the article is that if the US gov't can seize a bit torrent search engine, why can't/won't they seize Google or Bing which can produce the same search results?

They at least got a proper court order to seize same first.

One of the big reasons I have had the Amazon app on my phone is to compare prices on items in the store.  Now Amazon has come out with Price Check by Amazon, which reads the bar code and checks the price.  Slick and most people trust Amazon.

Red Laser is another bar code reader app. that does a meta shopping search on iPhone.  (I keep forgetting I have that one.)

I think apps are great for big national stores. But I think smaller boutique shops would do better making a mobile version of their website along with some good SEO to push it.

Grab my iPhone and read an ebook (fiction).  Usually that will put me back asleep.

Bob has been active on SEO Book forums.

Thanks werty.  Massa was blogging for awhile and then tried Twitter then when dark - but I figured he was talking somewhere cos Bob can only talk to himself so long.  ;D

Many of the others mentioned are on Twitter but very little of substance there just 140 char chatter.  (Wasn't that way at first - Twitter stream used to have more good SEO-ish reading referrals than now.) /topicdrift

bill, it is worth trying the free app when it returns.

If I owned a forum what I would really like is a true web based touch interface rather than a proprietary app, but I just have not seen anything as usable as this.

One thing about teh Internets is people can drop in and out of contact very quickly.  Being here and seeing so many forum nicks has brought some others MIA to mind.

Anyone know what happened to:

Black Knight: I didn't know him but always enjoyed his posts, back when.

Bob Massa: I actually know Bob from my directory days. He used to surface and then goes dark every few years.  Had moved to India last I heard.

There were a few others but many of you are here. Heh.

Feel free to list your own MIA's

Water Cooler / Re: What do you think of The Core so far?

Reminds me of WmW circa early to mid 2001.  Like someone said I could almost read every new thread back then and most of the forum nicks here go back then. Also a bit of early Threadwatch before that fell apart.

Honestly, the software does not much matter, it is the people who make the community and so far this is a compliment to you all.

« on: November 20, 2010, 12:04:03 PM »
I like Roku.  I have it in the den side by side with an old AppleTV, I don't use Netflix but Amazon is a great backup for renting movies that AppleTV does not have.  I also have a Roku box on an old TV in the basement, mainly so I can listen to Pandora Radio while I'm tinkering.

What I like about Roku is the ease of use.  I don't need a degree in programming to get it to work each time.
