Traffic / Rand on the future of Google SERPs
« on: November 05, 2018, 01:24:39 PM »
I thought this talk was pretty interesting.  Includes a shout out to one of our own too
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFFdMQq6TkI

It isn't exactly a new topic, but I thought Rand made the point well and took a pragmatic approach to it rather than the more usual screams of "the sky is falling". Worth a watch.

Hardware & Technology / Itty bitty : webpages encoded in a URL
« on: July 06, 2018, 10:06:59 PM »
Surprised this hasn't been posted: click here . That page explains it. It also doesn't exist anywhere - the page is encoded entirely in its URL.

No idea how I'd use it, but damn clever

A friend was asking how best to limit how much time one of their kids spends online (kid loves to fire up the tablet in the middle of the night).  I went through some options with them, but then go thinking about a smarter way to do it.  I'd be surprised if this doesn't exist, but I haven't found anything yet.

  • Subscription service that acts as DNS / filter. Managed through web interfact
  • Parent needs to change router DNS service to use
  • Any new device connecting needs to authorise (cookie set) with parent pin
  • Parent can then control access by device : hours per week, service times, blocked sites etc

It would have all the usual challenges that DNS isn't that hard to get around, but the per-device set-up seems more useful than what I've seen on offer (Just because I don't want my kids looking at midget porn, doesn't mean I'm giving it up, etc).  Also ISP specific offerings and those build into routers suck.

I'm actually not into filtering at all, but device level policies managed offsite seemed sensible. In my friends case they want to limit the kids devices to being usable 7am-7pm, but everyone keeps suggesting that they turn the router off overnight (no tv, no parent internet) or set it on each device using whatever system each uses.

Monetization / Heads up to anyone running adsense / adx
« on: November 09, 2017, 10:30:27 PM »
ads.txt - if you haven't come across it you need to look into it.

* If you have ads.txt and it isn't correct, your google income will likely already have started to drop
* If you don't have ads.txt then it'll likely start dropping next month

Marketing / Nice twitter strategy
« on: October 27, 2017, 10:26:32 PM »
I don't usually like auto DMs when you follow at twitter account, but this worked for me.  DM that ended with "PS: Here's a video intro I shot for you and a link to my calendar: " and linked to http://popl.ink/fUMtoR . OK, it's not a personalised video, but it made me watch and combined with the personal style of the video worked pretty well.

Monetization / AdWords exploit?
« on: August 10, 2017, 09:39:50 AM »
Many (not all) AdSense publishers saw CPC plummet this weekend. Drops of up to 75%. The issue has apparently been resolved with some advertisers being blacklisted.  Here is the closest thing to a statement from Google:

Quote
“Hi everyone. After chatting with a number of folks on my end here is where we are: Over the past 48 hours, a number of AdSense publishers alerted us to an issue with declining cost-per-click for ads on their sites. We were able to identify the cause of the issue quickly and resolve it quickly: Several ad buyers were using irresponsible campaign parameters, lowering query coverage for specific creative types in some countries. The ad buyers responsible have been blacklisted and impacted publishers should see that their coverage is back to normal in their AdSense account.”

Anyone care to guess at what  "irresponsible campaign parameters" would lower query coverage for specific creative types in some countries ?

Economics & Investing / Who's investing in crypto
« on: July 05, 2017, 08:58:40 AM »
I've looked into doing this twice in the past. Both times I decided that I didn't know enough to counter the risk of loss.

Last time I spent time seriously looking at this I was looking at Bitcoin. The price then was just under $100 (jun 2013 looking at my posts here). I decided against then as there was a lot of talk of the US government possibly seizing funds. My money instead went into something far safer that has pretty much done bugger all in 4 years thanks to the awesome clusterfuck that is the UK economy.

Bitcoin price yesterday was $2625. Even if I'd have diverted $1000 into bitcoin then I'd have $25k profit.  Yeah, hindsight is great so I won't kick myself too much. Does make me think I should have a couple of punts though. @ukgimp's post about Ethereum earlier made me check the maths.  As always, the fear is that the moment has passed, but the whole market seems to be less of a risk than 4 years ago.

Anyone investing in crypto? Thoughts / pointers to resources to get back up to speed would be appreciated.

Marketing / perception of domain suffixes
« on: June 12, 2017, 02:30:54 PM »
Anyone up for sharing their opinion on something?

I'm helping out on a new project where they are trying to build a brand with an audience that is not too dissimilar to the readership here (possibly not as old and jaded as us, but there are similarities none the less).    The .com of the brand name is predictably taken (by an a company in an unrelated industry). Favourite options are .net, .tech or .digital

Some stakeholders have suggested that .net sounds "old skool" or "spammy" .
Others that .tech or .digital "sound desperate" "are gimmicky" or "don't look like domain names if you see them out of context"

any thoughts?

Water Cooler / Anyone use 80legs?
« on: April 19, 2017, 08:55:44 AM »
I've got a small project that 80legs.com looks like a great match for.  It will need a simple custom "80app" though and I'm not sure this is something worth my time to learn.  Anyone have any experience or know someone who might be able to do this?
