Water Cooler / Download link for the last alexa 1 million?
« on: April 13, 2017, 02:22:08 PM »
As amazon rather  meanly stopped doing this, does anyone have a link to download a copy of the last dataset they released (or *cough cough* maybe a newer one?)

Web Development / CMS for web database?
« on: March 23, 2017, 06:30:25 PM »
Anyone know a simple CMS for running a user contributed  database?

Imagine a collaborative resource for widget nerds. Any nerd can submit details of their favourite widget filling in a form and adding images. Goes to moderation to stop you all abusing it ( :p ). Output is vaguely organised pages of blue widgets, green widgets, large widgets, small widgets etc based on the fields.  Each widget gets a full page.  Vaguely search friendly.

Historically I would have done this in Drupal. However I am old, fat and lazy now and wondered if there was an easier way.

Hardware & Technology / What happens when home assistants argue?

2 Google home assistants put "face to face"  and streamed on twitch.  Interesting and weirdly scary at times.  Parts of this seem deeper than some people I know can manage.  Possibly the full stream is now random

No big surprises,  but still interesting.  Mind you,  I found the link on reddit so unverified

Web Development / How? Rewrite website output of participating sites
« on: December 14, 2016, 05:40:56 PM »
If I wanted to offer a service that required adding code to a page, how could I do this without access to the code?  The closest I can think of is Cloudflare apps.  A good example is the analytics app.  If you use cloudflare (ie point your DNS at them) you can enable the analytics app and it will inject the code onto all of your pages.

I'd like to do something similar. Could have our own cloudflare app, but then we're tied to someone else's service.  Presumably we could also set up our own DNS server from scratch, but unless there is an out of the box solution that lets users manage their own DNS that sounds painful.

https://www.ohow.co/secret-%C9%A2oogle-com-is-not-google-who-is-behind-it/

Spotted this in one of my accounts today.  Lots of users with the language set to Secret.ɢoogle.com You are invited! Enter only with this ticket URL. Copy it. Vote for Trump!

Clever. Not seen language used before. Also the G of "Google" is not a g but an international character.

Web Development / Host to avoid : Siteground
« on: September 26, 2016, 11:15:21 AM »
Them : You've used too many processor cycles so we've turned your site off
Me : Uhm, ok so the XXX visits a month promise is rubbish
Them : Yes, we sell like that, but we actually limit on processor cycles
Me : err, ok. Weird though - this is a quiet site and you did already get me to upgrade to your full-on package
Them : Here is the URL causing a problem. You need to either fix it or go a a dedicated server (WTF this is a wordpress site with less than 300 users per day!)
Me : Yeah, I can't access that URL. You turned my site off remember?
Them : *silence*
Me : Quietly transfers out

Site down 2 days so far. No warning before hand, just turned it off.

I might have paraphrased the conversation above a little :)

Web Development / Fast hosting for scripts
« on: April 25, 2016, 02:53:09 PM »
I've got a javascript script that I want to host so that other sites can call it remotely.  There will a few versions of the script, but they are all tiny.

The hosting needs to be really fast and really reliable.  Inbuilt caching of some sort might be nice, but otherwise I don't need anything else: no mail servers, no php, none of that. Just fast, reliable serving of flat files a few hundred million times per month.

I've been looking at github pages and bitbucket's equivalent. Anyone have experience or alternatives to suggest?

Water Cooler / GWMT for evil
« on: January 25, 2016, 03:23:53 PM »
I'm not up to anything bad, but was looking for interesting examples of how someone might use webmaster tools access for evil.
(Inspired by a client with a lot of unrecognised users, I thought I'd write something about it.  I suspect that the warped minds of core members can come up with some nice examples).

I've got:

De-index everything!
Hide malicious software downloads from google
disavow all their links
steel their search data
quickly index new spam pages
un-verify the owner
bugger up crawling (url params or limiting crawl rate)
hijack rankings with the change of address tool (is this possible???)
