WikiTribune becomes WTdotSocial becomes Trust Cafe
« on: January 07, 2024, 09:00:02 PM »
You were dying to know that.  Jimmy Wales (Boomis, Wikipedia) started a news oriented social network called WikiTribune which morphed with some changes into WT.social which morphed again into Trust Cafe which is kinda like Reddit with only a few users.  But it sounds all trusty like.

https://www.trustcafe.io/en

Trust Cafe (TC)  follows the Reddit model for news and discussion only subreddits are called branches.

Fairly clean interface, no advertising which is nice as XTwitter loads up with ads, and not too many gimmicks like post.news.

I'm not sure I want another Reddit because I was scouting for a XTwitter replacement in addition to Mastodon (which I like).  I get a lot of news on XTwitter but it's getting harder to stay on Elon's playground.

It looks like a small and mostly trusted community for the time being. The problem of course is always scale which is a problem mostly based on the need for revenue. Maybe this doesn't need revenue. Wikipedia gets by on donations.

I have actually just started using Twitter again. I was a light lurker, but stopped all social sites except The Core in 2015. I've since added back Strava at the behest of a friend and have recently started using Twitter (in lurker mode) to follow a handful of fitness people and two writers. If you have a very small number of people you follow and they are not posting massive amounts, the feed is fundamentally straight chronology unedited, like the old days. The fact that Elon is losing a huge amount of money on it is just a bonus.
