Futurism: Ditch the windows

Hyperloop car

There's already a significant movement among car manufacturers to kill the rear window as each glass panel makes meeting safety standards (and fuel economy) tougher.  As self-driving cars evolve, we're going to evolve out of windows.  In some cases, they'll be replaced with camera screens, like they're proposing for passenger jets.

I've seen a few architectural products and concept pieces for buildings as well.  No blinds needed, NFFC.

They were making windowless buildings in the 1950s, especially schools.  My wife's HS had no windows, the idea was that the kids would pay more attention to what is going on in class if they didn't have nature as a distraction.  I personally hope this doesn't become a thing, I like being distracted by the outside world.  I ride BART (SF subway) and it really is an unpleasant experience, everyone on there seems to be miserable being part of a mechanized process.

agreed, gazing out of the window is part of the pleasure of life.  Even playing i-spy is impossible with no windows (OK not impossible but limited)

it instead has cameras recreating the visual effect of looking out, and much more continuously and impressively than is possible when you are relying on real windows.

No holes in walls, no glass, cheaper, better view.  And no blinds, NFFC. Just flip a switch.

Oh God... I've done a bit of looking into this - they've done productivity studies that have demonstrated that the extra cost of adding windows to a workspace has a very rapid payback time (I want to say that the extra cost paid for itself in less than two years). I think I have a note on this with a link or two if anyone cares.

trickery works

though tech is cheap enough now to have a real view in a fake window. see jet above.

>We may never see the real world again.

And we haven't even broached the idea of window hybrids using varying degrees of AR.  So, assume that emulated windows take off due to low cost of ownership. (They will, high cost construction first. Recording studio designers have been working on fake windows for a while now for soundproofing, but only recently have technologies become cheap enough for it to be viable, imo.)

Can't quite see the ocean from your condo? Easy fix if you can manage a better camera location.  Don't like that power pole in the middle of your view?  Have your $5 RPi snip it from the rendering on-the-fly.
