Gizmodo new design
« on: February 15, 2011, 10:33:22 AM »
I am not sure how many people here read Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/) but I would visit at least once a day to have a quick scan of their posts as they sometimes had the scoop on interesting gadget type news - recently they redesigned from your standard blog format to its current overly fancy format!

Not sure if there are any opinions here? But I cant stand it and I find myself now heading to engadget, which I dont feel is as engaging as Gizmodo used to be.

Any views?

It's horrible and the usability stinks. You're absolutely right, it does not invite you to digg further into the site.

I don't tend to visit Gizmodo much but have heard a lot of discontented mutterings about the new version and no one saying they like it.

Not sure how much of that is just fear of change and how much genuine usability? I hated the new BBC News design for months, but have just realised typing this I now find it perfectly easy to use.

I think the usability sucks! I didnt like the BBC site to begin with either, but that was purely design reasons for me - the new Gizmodo site actually makes it harder to find new posts, its really disappointing.

What's interesting is that they appear to be forcing some scripts and/or cookies to load before they'll display the page contents.  I'm running a few privacy extensions on Chrome and when they flipped the switch all I get is a blank content column.  I haven't bothered checking exactly what's causing it because it's only a marginal site for my daily reading.

I have it bookmarked across the top of my browser and visited daily, until the redesign.  One of the worst efforts I've seen.  Terrible usability and it breaks often.  I am only visiting occasionally now, hoping they backtrack.  Same with Digg... anyone still visit everyday?  Just waiting on Fark to complete the trifecta of terrible redesigns.

I used to scan Lifehacker and a few other Gawker sites regularly...until the redesign. It's completely unusable now. Their designers should be ashamed of this crap they foisted on this group of websites. I've dropped all Gawker Media sites from my lists of sites to check out...just as I did Digg when they redesigned.
