That's wild. I wonder if they'll require tugboat escorts in more ports after this.

I wonder if it had a touchscreen

found it.
US Navy will scrap touchscreen controls on its destroyers | Engadget
A poor touch interface contributed to the USS John McCain collision.

The ship definitely had a power failure as it approached the bridge. If it had touchscreens I wonder how long they take to reboot?

Cargo ship Dali apparently lost power before striking bridge pillar in Baltimore
https://www.newser.com/story/348224/ships-mayday-call-may-have-saved-lives.html
The cargo ship: The Singapore-flagged container ship Dali is owned by Grace Ocean but had been chartered by Danish shipping company Maersk and was operating on a route between Baltimore and Asia, per CNN and the Guardian.
Prior collision: Built in 2015, the ship collided with the quay while leaving the port of Antwerp, Belgium, only a year later. "Its bow reportedly swung around, causing the stern to scrape the side of the quay, significantly damaging several meters of the hull," though no injuries were reported, per the Guardian.
Recent deficiency: Authorities in San Antonio, Chile, gave the ship a second "deficiency" for "propulsion and auxiliary machinery"—gauges, thermometers, etc. in June 2023, per the New York Times. The ship was last inspected in September, by the US Coast Guard, with no deficiencies reported, per the AP.

Actually just got a glimpse of it today.

Questions are being raised about the level of physical protection provided to the bridge piers. It's a legit question but still annoying coming from the insta-experts on social networks.
>glimpse
It's going to take awhile just to remove the wreckage. That's a lot of steel.
-
>piers
It would take a helluva pier to stop or even deflect a loaded container ship that's underway.
There is concern about supply chain issues. Though I think channel obstructions will be cleared in relatively short order --days, maybe weeks.
That said, think about bridges like these as targets during a war.

Here's a minute by minute timeline of the last 5 minutes before the collision.

It sounds like everybody tried their best but without engine power there was not much they could do.
The harbor pilot noticed the ship starting to swing right, in the direction of one of the piers holding up the Key Bridge. At 1:26, he called for the tugs to return; he urged the captain to try to get the engine back up and directed the crew to steer hard left. As a last ditch measure, at 1:27, he ordered the crew to throw down the port anchor.

The Francis Scott Key bridge was "fracture critical," authorities said Wednesday.
That means the entire structure could crumple if one vital piece of bridge fails.
Of the 615,000 bridges in America, 17,468 are fracture-critical, the NTSB said.

I'm thinking RU & CN are behind this, probably taking over ships' autopilots at critical junctures. hhh
