>>Ioniq

I will know that EVs are mainstream when they no longer feel the need to be called Tesla or Ioniq or Bolt/Volt or MachE or....

I'm hoping that Hyundai will forego the Mother Ship In The Cloud model  --but I have my doubts they will.  User info is too valuable.

Well... they are listening to me - at least on the website, they show an AWD option with the basic SE model. I'm curious to see when the announce pricing and where it falls relative to a Tesla.

>> Mother Ship In The Cloud model

You know how you don't own the music or Kindle books or movies you "buy" these days? You know how there have been cases of Amazon vacuuming books out of people's Kindle libraries? It turns out Tesla does this with certain features. I guess you can sell your car, but not your Tesla Autopilot subscription. So you test drive the used Tesla, like it, buy it, drive it home. The change in title clears at the DMV or whatever triggers it, and the autopilot feature goes away. Something like that (based on Thanksgiving conversations with nephew)

We actually looked at one. It was going to be $58K with AWD and without dealer fees and all that.

That's when I realized that for the price of an Ioniq, I could get the AWD with a very nice Tucson hybrid and the EV with the completely serviceable Chevy Bolt. The Bolt would be the daily driver and the Tucson for long trips and inclement weather. That gives lots more utility, slightly higher carbon footprint over time (because our long-drive/inclement weather miles don't add up to a lot) and still probably all comes out just a little cheaper. Although I suppose insuring two vehicles that cost $58K in aggregate is more expensive than insuring a single $58K vehicle.

Hyundai Promises To Keep Buttons In Cars Because Touchscreen Controls Are Dangerous

About a year ago, I read that the US Navy was ripping out touchscreen controls in the bridge and replacing them with buttons & knobs.

Touch screens are a PIA.  My pickup truck's radio is touchscreen with real small button areas to switch stations.  The truck rides like a truck which makes it hard to hit the right area.  Also a lot more time with eyes off the road.

I miss the old radios with real buttons.

Carmakers like VW are bringing back buttons because drivers loathe all the touchscreens.
