Where does all that efficiency gain come from? Going from 18kwh/100km to 10kwh/100km is a massive gain. Has Tesla really just been throwing away 40% of the energy?

That's a "believe it when you see it" thing. This sounds like the old MS vaporware announcements. Make big claims that keep customers on the fence and waiting until you can retool and turn out something that, in the end exceeds Tesla by a little bit? Or maybe start now and hope that in three years when you have to show your work, battery tech is better?

Thought the same, but it will start the range war anyway.

Somewhere around 750 miles, the range wars are over. When I was younger, I would have said 1000 miles :-)

Mfg estimated (marketing dept range) range will always be way optimistic over actual real world range.  Mountains, temp, running A/C, speed, wind, punching it to pass on 2 lane hwy, towing, hauling mother-in-law, etc.

Over the New Year I had a go on my brother in law Mi Electric Scooter 3 built by Xiaomi

https://www.mi.com/global/product/mi-electric-scooter-3/

The range of the scooter on their website said 30KM - I covered 42KM on one charge over pretty rough roads (for a scooter) and I was hitting 25KM/H when ever I could.

Lots of fun!

An update of the firmware apparently will increase the speed but not the range.

"Mercedes took the car over mountainous terrain and spent a spell cruising above 85mph on the German autobahn to show off the car’s real-world credentials. It arrived at the seaside with 15pc charge to spare."

I want one.

Not the form factor I want, of course, and not AWD, but 620 miles on a mountainous drive over the Alps and down the coast is just what the doctor wife ordered.
