Marmite Shortage in UK
« on: October 13, 2016, 10:01:32 PM »
Soylant Black Marmite is in short supply in the UK.

http://time.com/4529747/marmite-shortage-tesco-brexit/

This is a bit like the 2012 - 2014 Great Ammunition shortage in the USA. Normally, the US would come to Britain's aid in their hour of need, but alas, since it isn't packed with sugar it isn't even made here. Canada has banned it, so no CARE packages from the New World.  I think South Africa still makes it and then there is the Aussies and Vegemite if you can pry it out of their hands.

Beware of Russian and Chinese copies, with dubious ingredients appearing on eBay within the next few days.

God's speed.   ;)

I once attended a party for the local USCG brass, it was thrown by one of the contractors for their new, guaranteed-to-fail aircraft parts database. The contractor boss pulled me aside and told me to watch the facial expressions as the guests sampled the dips and spreads ...he had put Marmite in one fancier serving dishes. Unmarked, no visible jar.  It was hilarious.

BTW, the stuff tastes like 90w gear oil.

We have good stocks here. A large pot to keep me going at least a month.

Anyone with withdrawal is welcome to a sniff, and if I like you, you can have some on toast.

If we ever ran out, I don't know how we would make the gravy for the Sunday roast.  It would be a nightmare!

Surely that's what Bovill is for and not Marmite?
(Unless it's a veggie Sunday Roast which is utter pointless anyway)

Gravy is proper meat stock, with a little marmite to give in zing:)

And its not just gravy....

Marmite is an amazing seasoning (especially in gravy) but vile if used in any other way.

Gentlemen's Relish however....

> What is Marmite

It's a concentrated extract of brewers yeast. It's extremely sticky and not far off the constituency of bearing grease, although extremely sticky and black in colour.

It is the weirdest flavour to try and describe but is extremely savoury / umami along with a huge saltiness to it.

it is either loved or loathed by those in Britain, so much so that their advertising for it for eons, has been exactly that. See attached image.

I love it as a seasoning in cooking but hate it as many people use it, as a spread on toast etc.

Try "salty, congealed sulfur"

Sulfur? Noooo :)

They put something similar on Twiglets...  everybody loves twiglets!

I must admit to once hating it on toast, but as my taste buds have matured, I have learned to love it.  Jason, you just need time. Just need lots of butter too.

Marmite Butter, two in one, get in.

I do have a little fetish for Marmite and peanut butter I should add, as well as Philadelphia (soft cheese) and Marmalade, but we're diverting of the subject now :D
