Netflix Huge Rate Increase
« on: July 13, 2011, 05:35:40 PM »
So Netflix has decided to split its streaming and dvd-via-mail services into 2 separate services with separate fees.

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month
Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs (including Blu-ray), 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $9.99 a month

Seems quite a few are upset:

I've been on plan 2 above, with an upcharge for bluray paying about $12/month which included streaming. We stream 3-5 days/week and maybe get 1-3 dvds a month, so I'll probably just drop back to streaming only. Cable just got (a little bit) more interesting again, and the local blockbuster/red box will probably get the dvd business from us.

Louise liked the split-up of services. She plans to send them back the unopened dvd she's been aging in the bookshelf for the last 6 months and change to streaming only.   She's been electron-only for months now anyway.

Looked at my account and I have been a Netflix member since December 1999.

Anyway, I used to watch probably 6-8 DVDs from them a month but in the past couple years It is more like one every 6-8 months. Our last batch of DVDs sat for about 6 months without being watched. We got around to sending those back but the ones we got are still sitting unopened for the past 3 months. I really do wish they had everything streaming. I would gladly pay $20 a month for that.

Here ya go, Dras...

And don’t even get me started on Redbox. If your life sucks enough that you can manage back-to-back trips to the grocery store, go ahead and rent a DVD out of a vending machine. I didn’t realize so many of you were thinking, “Yes, Blockbuster was great, but I really wish the store just the size of a Coke machine, and people were buying cigarettes behind me.”

heheh, great read for ?-day afternoon. (What day is it anyway? I think I'm still in 4th of July mode.)

Redbox I think would be a good option, for the once or thrice a month we want to watch a movie, though I haven't used one yet. Amy is going to the grocery store like 3 times a week to buy food. (yeah I eat a lot, so?)

Plus we drive right by on the way to/from the gym basically every weekday. Hell it's so close I'd ride my bike there if I wasn't taking my life into my own hands crossing the 6 lane outside of our neighborhood. (And yeah rc, I know - quit working out and biking and go build a house or something, right? It's ok man, just don't puke on me.)
