101domain + .ly extension
« on: January 23, 2013, 11:00:31 AM »
Anyone know issues with either of the above?  Safe to build something relying on a .ly extension?  101domain any good?

I'm relatively wise in international domain name concerns and issues.

The issues in .ly are more about the political situation in the country of Libya.

With an instable country since the Arab spring there is no way of knowing what may or may not happen. For a "legit" site that you want to own and build long term it is something you need to think about. Having said that, unless it is an 18+ industry etc (Where my roots are - gambling) then I wouldn't worry too much as Libya will need an income and income diversification away from oil so I don't think capitalism will die.

101domain have a good selection of ccTLDs, but I only use them if I absolutely have to. Customer service is crap. I've lost domains through them to competitors. They didn't care.

I'd look at Instra if they have the same ccTLD extention. They're the better of 2 evils in my book.

cheers Bill.  Bit worrying about losing names.  I've used 101 once in the past,  and didn't think much either way. Impression this time around: slow.  5 days to register a .ly apparently.  No idea if that is normal.

However, based on what you have said, I think I'll transfer out when I can.  Thanks.
