An Argument in Favor of Web Apps
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:06:10 PM »
The Web is still mostly open source, this seems like a good argument why web apps are still very important.

That Apple royalty scheme is going to land them in hot water eventually. People won't bend over backwards to read Kindle books in Safari. They're going to want to use the App.

I agree bill.  One advantage the iPad had was I was not locked into just one ebook store but had my choice of several when using it as an ereader.  They are destroying that advantage.

One of the comments on that page correctly states that Apple product owners buy more than Android users (on average, I'm sure there are exceptions). That's an important point, but I'm quite uneasy about the way Apple seem to think they own the user and hence have the right to skim a percentage of whatever they spend.

Apple seem to want to have their cake and eat it, if they allow an app at all the publisher should be free to use whatever payment system they choose (as long as that payment system is trustworthy). Enforcing the rules they have will push developers to bend the rules (which is more likely) or to go down the web app route (a major point of Apps is to make life easier when launching... I doubt we'll see this tagline "Kindle, there isn't an app for that") - I can't see 30% being acceptable in many verticals.

This is not a good situation.

On the other hand it is their App Store, and publishers will have to play by their rules if they want access to the walled garden that Apple has setup. If the government doesn't come after them with some sort of restriction of trade investigation then we'll probably see more web app workarounds that Apple can't control.

Personally I just prefer to JailBreak my devices and use whatever I want. ;)

I think this emphasizes the need to have a really good smartphone version of your website (a web app) in addition to any platform specific app even if your strategy is mainly about platform apps.  Apple seems to change the app store rules frequently, but they cannot control the Web (except the Flash bit.)
