WordPress themes??
« on: December 08, 2020, 03:38:07 PM »
I'm a WordPress newbie.

Can anyone recommend a theme for a blog that would not drive me crazy with sloppy validation, poor semantic structure, etc.?

I've become a fan of Generatepress lately. It's newest version cleaned out all floats for layout and uses flex and grid, it gives good HTML that is reasonably lean.

I chose it because it was the fastest, lightest theme I could find that was not pared down to the barebones. I am not a stickler for HTML validation. Once you add in plugins and such, it can be a real challenge. However, I am a stickler for lean, well-formed HTML and sites that do well on Pagespeed, Lighthouse and the like. I've done two Generatepress sites in the last two months and am happy with the balance between being nice looking and having decent performance. In both cases, it is the images and the plugins that are the performance killers, not the theme.

Same here. Been pretty much using it and some of the child themes exclusively for the past few years. No idea if it is the best or not but it is what I am at least reasonably comfortable with.

After some behind-the-scenes discussion with Ergophobe I've settled on GeneratePress.

I checked the validation of my single blog post so far. The CSS was fully valid and the HTML had only 1 error and 1 warning. GTmetrix gave the page an A. That is a major, MAJOR improvement over the same post page created using WordPress's new Twenty Twenty One theme.

I'm playing with the appearance, and I'm happy with all the possibilities I've discovered so far. I'll be able to end up with a clear family resemblance between the blog and the existing part of the site.

I'm a happy camper, well on the way to becoming a GeneratePress fan!
