POS connection I got at home. Amazing as I live less that 1km from the HQ of 3 of the largest isps/telcos..
I just got hooked up to some seriously fast cable... this is the fastest I've ever had. It's not instant, but almost.
From the looks of your results, if you clicked on some porn, by the time you got there, they would already be smoking cigarettes...
:)
Hahahaha! Maybe I should try.
Dont whine to me Rumbas! This is what it's like in when you live in rural California (PS this is my *fast* connection - god forbid I'm at home on my satellite connection).
Envious of both up and down speeds dogboy.
I'm on an ADSL line with Be Unlimited (in the UK)
6.7 down
.9 up
That's on a service that's supposed to be up to 24Mb/s down and 2.5Mb/s up.
can't get cable (up to 50Mb/s - and actually average over 40Mb/s according to independent tests...)
Waiting for BT Infinity (not over copper) so that the distance to the exchange is not the problem it is now.
Yeah, I didn't expect a real notable change but once I got on it it was fast enough to peak my curiosity and inspire that speedtest.
Nice site, btw, huh? I guess it's the numbers that really count but I still get impressed they can find me on a map... Of course I play with lighters and other shiny objects all day too...
This is what I can get on my iPhone.
Speedtest has got an even better looking GUI now, must have updated recently.
I have been with BT for an eternity. I have their 20MB package and the BEST I have ever got for download speed was 16MB and it tends to average out now around 6-8MB.
I've yet to meet anyone who has their Infinity which is supposed to be a truer 40MB into the house because it dispenses with the copper at the house and goes pure fibre.
It's why think people who are on cable will always be faster, even though it is probably more unreliable, because it's either ON or OFF, and nothing in between.
You know, I think they updated it again since I posted this...
Man I wish I had their design time to burn...
I used to use speakeasy.net/speedtest, but speedtest.net has become more reliable over the past year.

Yeah, I was finishing up the new office and finding the hottest spot for the wireless router a couple days ago. Refreshed and got the new design, was kind of trippy, thought I had inadvertently clicked some kind of theme button.

32.69 seems to be the flavor of the day here too....
Nice ping, you must be really close to the data center.
I wish I had your upload, but they keep getting better every year here.

my 16mb connection works well, doesn't it?! ::)
and it's quite whizzy today - that's before the neighbour comes home and starts downloading his 'educational' videos
Seems slow today...

I think I have to block this thread. You guys are depressing me.

[ergophobe scratches head.... wonders what this thread has to do with version control.... then remembers his Harry Potter and the usage of this term in the UK]
Yeah Paul, why did you have to go an spoil it for us all!!
Does your ISP have offices in other parts of the UK, if so I want to talk to them.
I've a 40GB database to upload in the coming weeks. The server is in France... I might be better off just handing them a DVD in person.
Damn Paul, that's pretty sweet :)
Our office ISP is JANET - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JANET ;D
"JANET is a private British government-funded computer network dedicated to education and research"
The office i'm in is in the business village of the university, lots like them all over the country. Full serviced, internet included in the £450 a month for tiny office, up to £2k for the huge ones.
This thread got me wondering about testing the actual speed on the satellite connection. I did this in the evening when it slows to a crawl... but still...
I live in fear of people with connections like Paul's thinking it would be a good idea to send me 20 high-res pictures of their cat.

Did I win?
yeap ;D ;D
Even if i turn everything off that might be sucking bandwidth i still cant beat that upload

OK. So if anyone else wants to feel a bit better about their connection, think back to dial up.....

On a Mac portable with a 9600 modem connecting to Compuserve and then eTown
I have been with bethere for a few years, always found the customer service and uptime excellent, speed is another matter though

Mick, I got one of their new routers - seems to have improved things a bit - but even so, mine was never as slow as your readings - is that typical?
yeah and come Monday I will be looking for another ISP
cheers
Colin
ok, now, from a marketing standpoint, do you think the nice graphics influence your confidence in the numbers they present? eheheh I know for me it does:) I am a sucker for shiny packaging. I also like how it pretends to let me peek inside the machine to see my progress. It's just as cool on my phone.
I am seriously considering switching back to Virgin.
I hate them with a passion though - their support is awful and their accounts department can't do simple maths..but...
... they are the fastest connection available here (by a long chalk), and their 'claimed' speed is pretty close to their actual speed.
Damn - I hate it when my 'selfish desire' and 'commonsense' are in conflict :(
<the old man (4eyes hates) voice>
...then focus only on the selfish desire:)
You either need to be making money or having fun.
...And if you aren't doing one (or both) of those things, you are doing something wrong.
Common sense?! If you want to be like everybody else, then think what they think and do what they do...
</ old man>
<dogboy voice>
...and then come in here and post your results:)
</dogboy voice>
LOL
Quote...And if you aren't doing one (or both) of those things, you are doing something wrong.
... I can give you a whole string of 'or' options there that bust that model up .. but thats not the point :)
I have no problem following the selfish option - it is what usually happens eventually, I just need to beat the 'common sense' part of my brain to death with enough alcohol before I make the decision :)
What I mean is, the selfish temptation to go for the super-fast broadband provided by Virgin is fighting against the absolute bloody certainty that they will make my life a living hell at a crucial moment by having the connection go flaky... and then putting me in support desk queue of 500 waiting for an Indian call center employee, who, despite what he claims is NOT called 'David' and has no f**ing idea what has happened anyway.
... but then the selfish me says 'hey, maybe they changed, maybe they will give reliable service this time' .. etc.. and the argument lasts until sufficient alcohol is applied, then I give in to 'selfish'. The problem is, I then have face up to the 'commonsense' me doing the whole 'told you so' bit further down the line, which means the application of even more alcohol etc... :)
QuoteI am seriously considering switching back to Virgin.
I'm pretty sure this impossible. I think once you're non-virgin, you can't change that status last I checked. Which is strange, because you can change your gender.
pah!
nonsense - I was a virgin three times last week ;)
Holy cheezewhiz, did you see what kind of speed they get at Google?
(https://th3core.com/chat/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthenextweb.com%2Fshareables%2Ffiles%2F2011%2F03%2F1226257835.png&hash=062044177e4e1b85c4fc4c39d2957c88ca1210e6)
I could go for some of that. ;)
from:
http://thenextweb.com/shareables/2011/03/29/how-fast-is-the-internet-at-google-mind-blowing/
any they only get 3 1/2 stars ;D
Holy moly, gotta get me some of that.
Where do you get that Torben. I thought Paul would nail this dick swinging contest. I had a Janet connection for about 8 years. :-). Wonderful.
Here is what I get with my supposed 6mb.
(https://th3core.com/chat/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.speedtest.net%2Fresult%2F1230035061.png&hash=7f50acd8077d4a96666177a1e717a9688db90fe9) (http://www.speedtest.net)
Also thanks to ATT I guess I have 150gb limit per month.
Might be time to switch.
I remember downloading MP3s years ago over dialup, and I was lucky to get 5 songs over night. Now with spotify you can stream almost any album.

Granada Spain.
Not bad considering some isps still use donkeys here.
Finally got 100meg service in my area. Not a huge deal and upload not that great at 5meg, but I'm really surprised about getting over 80 meg in my office which is connected via wireless bridge.
Good timing on my modem frying a few months back, as I was all ready with docsis3.
Not quite Google speeds, but pretty good...
Wondering if I should upgrade to the 1Gbps connection...
That's only 449 times fast than my satellite tested out. They keep saying the new satellite is coming online "soon" but my area is still blacked out. That's supposed to be 12 Mbps... meanwhile all you people are depressing me... there are compensations for living this far from fast internet though.
I've the option of 100Mb net here, which is pretty good going as the catchment area for 100 miles around here must be about 100K people.
I'm more in the habit of developing on a server rather than locally, I don't have much of a need for huge upload/download speeds. The small drawback is that I save my work often so there's a few seconds delay between clicking save & it actually being saved.
If I wasn't working alone at home or family were hogging bandwidth I'd see a use for the extra B/W.
Still, it must be nice to have 100Mb on tap :)
For iPad it just redirects to the app, won't let me open the site :(
