Disconnecting from the desk

I have been trying for sometime to get to my goal of working from anywhere without my own kit.  Being disconnected until I want to check things and then being fully connected.

The idea: I should be able to wake up tomorrow anywhere** in the world (or just go to the pub/coffee shop), get online and control my business with the minimum of kit.  I should be able to carry everything I need on my motorcycle (are you reading this Rupert?) and work when I need to.

The test: Next years bike tour - Isle of Man TT, European GP, Tour de France, Le Mans, Tour de France plus the sights in between.

I have -
PhoneMyPC (smart phone app to control my office PC's and servers)
Google apps (testing office 365)
Wordpress sites, no local software.
Visa card
Paypal card (on the way)
3G smart phone

**This is very unlikely as a family man, but when the kids are away....

Is there anything you use that could add to the idea?

I would still bring a laptop. You can get a small/light one. And actually get real work done on them.

I have traveled a bit, and it is 90x faster to use a laptop than to dick around with an inferior item (tablet / phone /etc). For 3 lbs of weight it is worth it.

Also great for watching movies / booking hotel rooms / etc.

Maybe a netbook would suit.  I use an early acer one (as a pc connected to a flat screen and a wireless desktop at home) and it has been quite solid.  At that price I could take one in each pannier.

I am seriously in love with my Mac Air for travelling. It's smaller than many fashion magazines. The latest generation is even smaller and more powerful than mine.

Yeah, I travel with one that I keep cleaned of my cookies, passwords, etc. and is worth only a few hundred dollars ...cheap enough that I wouldn't cry over having it stolen or left behind and clean enough not to be too concerned who ended up with it.  But in a crunch, I can use it to do mission-critical stuff.   Had that happen while traveling out in the deep boonies (New Mexico) about 18 months ago and I was able to keep things patched together while finishing the trip.  I wouldn't have been able to pull it off with a tablet.
