Grunts are good imho. If it were more noisy, then the value of the conversation would go down.   

Information comes in nuggets to me. 

As the occasional slap when I realise I am wrong
or the warm glow of having an idea confirmed by someone else.
Or the straight direction when I ask for help or advice.
