The Pi boards can run off 4 AA batteries. I will be using them to power my autonomous drone army.

I just ordered the model B, comes with 512mb and 2 usb ports.

I've been wanting to try a cheap box to run XBMC, the main two distros for this are maturing (RC3) and it's hard to beat $35.

Yeah, I got mine. It works as billed.  I got the B as well, with 512.  I'm pretty sure the mfg has upgraded the later B's to 1024. THAT would be good as XBMC was too slow for me.

The Rpi is definitely maturing well -and quickly.  Give it a year and there will be an app store, if there isn't one already.

But it needs more RAM.

They bumped up to 512mb in October, nothing higher yet. It's pretty solid from what I can tell, not quite as zippy as a dedicated box of course, but very serviceable.

The only time it chokes is if you try to downmix DTS or AC3 audio, since they don't currently have licensing for hardware decoding (possibly in the near future.) My AVR does all the heavy lifting so the pass-through is perfect for me.

Are these available in stores in the US, or only over the net? I'm intrigued.

I really don't see the point. It does not seem practical in any way.

It's not yet, at least not for a replacement desktop for our 'normal' use.  Where it is and will be practical is for stand-alone, dedicated computers. Particularly those applications that require low heat output and/or low power draw.

Yeah, it's main use is for running as a media server. I've been wanting to try out XBMC for my home theater setup.

For $40 to my door, I couldn't be more pleased. The next closest option is around $100+ (Pivos Xios) and that doesn't run nearly as well. Other alternatives are jailbroken AppleTV2 (no longer available so running $200+ on ebay), other small nettop ($250+) or build a small htpc (much larger, heat, power consumption, etc.)

This thing runs on a cell phone power supply, 700ma, probably draws half of that.

Very slick, I love it. XBMC 12 just went final a couple days ago, Raspbmc should be updated to final in the next day or so, if not tonight.

The best setup is to install it to usb thumb drive, SD card is for boot only. Very zippy this way.

RC, give Raspbmc a shot running from a usb stick, I think you'll be surprised. It's a one-click install, and Raspbmc for your version should run fine.
