I occassionally need a Win laptop for road-warrior work.  My trusty old Panasonic Toughbook gave up the ghost yesterday.  I can't really see spending more than $400 but -hell- it's a business expense.

What's thecore using lately?

I recently bought an HP > Win 8 and it works.

Spams almost as good as a MAC  ;D

Doesn't really matter which one, as long as it's running XP.

I know. Trust me, I dread moving away from xp.  But this laptop is only used 4 or 5 times a year so it'a a good place to try win 8. ...and load up a bunch of tweaks to make it look like xp.

I have a use for bluetooth 4, as well. I'm playing around with sensors & such.  So far, it's narrowing down to leveno & acer.

Win 8 was the most frustrating experience I've had with a laptop, HANDS DOWN.  It has the *worst* usability I've ever seen with an OS.

Best spec so far with Win 8 & bluetooth 4 is

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 13.1-Inch Touchscreen Ultrabook  $669.99

Intel Core i5-3337U ULV Processor (1.8 GHz)
4 GB DDR3 RAM
500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive, 24 GB Solid-State Drive

Lenovo model# 59365302

That Lenovo sounds quite good. In recent shopping jaunts I have been quite impressed with the IdeaPad line.

In Japan I get a lot more local product exposure on the shelves. I've also been quite impressed with the Sony VAIO laptops. They have in-store customization packages where a sales rep will let you completely customize your machine. Not only can you pick all of the internal components, but also the external case and keyboard.

The ToughBook line is still going strong. I stopped by the Panasonic showroom and played with the convertible tablets. Those things look like they'd last a while, but they're not cheap.

Pro tip:  thump a dead laptop's underside rapidly & hard while it's trying to boot and you may bring it back to consciousness long enough for one last goodbye.

What kind of pro was that? Tortoise caretaker / chiropractor at your local zoo? :o
