Instead of having 2 or 3 monitors, I've decided to have one large one.  Mostly because I like to keep a small desk so I don't have places to put papers etc.

Any suggestions?

i've been running a Sharp 42" hdtv as a monitor for 6 or 7 years now.  everything's gotten easier and cheaper re flatscreens during that time.  got an hdmi port on your computer just jack in a 1080p tv from wally-world.

40-45 inch is about right for a good working environment. 55 would be too large, i think.

I've got a 46" 1080p TV  that we use in our client area.  It's nice to huddle round as a group, but I wouldn't want to use it as my main screen. Text never quite looks right on TV screens to me and the colour is too vivid - which is a pain when demoing to clients.    Besides that it is good for what we use it for (and looks impressive), but I really wouldn't want to be sat at it all day.

>It's nice to huddle round as a group,

Put an Apple TV on it (100 usd)  and you can stream your demo to it from ipad, Works great. Ipad becomes a glorified remote.

Not a problem with the Sharp.  I probably tweaked the settings.  The odd-sized resolutions can be a minor nuisance but even that is easier to manage now.  Before going to Win 8 I ran Powerstrip app, now I just use the resident display options.  There is another app I added a few months ago that I really like; it remembers your individual program's window sizing and desktop placement. Can't recall the name right now.

When were they anything else?

Got an old dell box (free) running on it with wireless keyboard and mouse. So, full featured system that also runs as our AWR server when it isn't a demo machine.

Maybe just need to play with the controls a bit more to improve the picture then.

@grnidone how big are you wanting to go?

grnidone

That's just it...I'm not sure how large I need.  My television is maybe 26 inches?  (I despise television in general, so the one I have is several years old and not even HD.)

I've noticed that I use my laptop as one "monitor" but then I always move things to the "real" monitor to actually work.  And I just don't quite have enough room.  That's why I wanted to ask you guys what was "big enough" but not too big.

And, I'd like some recommendations on brands.  I haven't bought a monitor in 10 years.  I don't mind spending money on a GREAT monitor.  I'll get a slower processor to put money on a great monitor.  (Although Apple monitors are just a bit more than I'd like to spend.)

What's the biggest bang for the buck?

I usually buy dell when on sale, dell makes good IPS monitors.

I tried this, and the resolution was too low, very pixelated.

You have to spend large money to get them to 2560 pixels.

I've been using a 46" 1080p Sharp for years.  I had been looking at two 40" monitors instead.  But not, I'm waiting on HDMI 2.0, NVIDIA, and better TVs.
That'll allow me to have a 55" 4k TV at 60fps.  The dpi should be tight enough to look good, and It'll be tons of screen real-estate without bezels in the way.

Good things are coming!

How far away are you viewing from, it just seems grainy to me when I have tried such things, even on smaller screens that you suggest.

Travoli

When I started using the big screen, it wasn't any more grainy than a normal 24" LCD.  Now, I notice it after staring at a higher DPI screen.  I sit about a meter away.  Just waiting for the 4k technology to catch up to have a new "quad monitor" on one screen.  The higher DPI and large canvas should be great.  a 46" 4k TV would be plenty.

Yikes!  The HDTV in my living room is only 40 inches, and that is smaller than a monitor for you guys .  Don't you have problems with eye wander?
