webOS you can't go back

My HP Touchpad is dual boot, and it works pretty darn good with whatever version of Android it boots too.  I almost never use it with webOS.

A couple of days ago I rebooted it to webOS and at first it was like getting reacquainted with an old friend.  But after awhile you start noticing that everything is rusting around the edges. Apps are no longer being supported and while many appear to work, secondary functions have quit. Like Zite still works, but it won't let you login to either Twitter or FB to share articles.  It's a bit like driving a Ford Pinto in 2013, not only is the car out of date, the floorboards have rusted out and its spewing blue smoke out the tail pipe. You know its just a mater of time.

Anyway, it reminds me that, except for specialized uses, you can't go back.

OTOH the hardware has held up well.

I was surprised to find that Apollo app.  Why bother with developing it when everything else seems to be stuck in 2011.

Brad

I noticed a few apps are still being supported by some dedicated fans.  Others that were pay have been made free but it is all a doomed rear guard action.

I snooped on the webos forums and openwebOS is nowhere near consumer ready.  Sigh, because I would try it again.

The flip side is, I keep hearing that the US government has the ability to shut down all Android and iOS devices in the event of insurrection or unrest, I bet that webOS will still boot rust and all.  :-D

I forgot to add that there are now some fairly good free games on webos now. This makes it pretty damn good choice for a guest tablet ---particularly when your guests include 7-10 yr olds who seem to have more than an intuitive understanding of how tablets work.  Tablets are in their DNA.

Storytime:

About 2 years ago, the cable installer was at my daughter's house. My grandson, then 5-ish, kept pestering the cable guy to let him borrow his phone so he could play games.  The cable guy repeatedly told the kid that he didn't HAVE any games but my grandson wouldn't believe him. To prove it, the cable guy gave the kid his phone.  According to the cable guy, the kid found some games that he'd never seen before in less than 2 minutes.

One of the last things I did before abandoning webos for android was to glean through the webos store and grab every free game I could find, checkers, backgammon, whatever and, as you say they have added more.  Looks like the educational apps for kids have been added to as well, which makes sense since I bet most TPs have been turned over to the kids.

Well, what do you know.  When its time for a new TV, I'll have to give LG a look.

I've read something about smart tvs --*maybe LG*-- bricking if you don't agree to their privacy/tracking terms.
