Hey 8" win tablet for $150 hits a sweet spot for me. $100 for 7.

Is this full blown windows though?

rcjordan

>7

7" is too small. I've had a few test units and ended up giving them away.  8" gets interesting ...but I like the $100 pricepoint, too.

>full blown

I read better specs somewhere, I think in a link from that article.  Not bad. So, yeah, I'm thinking it's full blown. But will keep an eye out for more details.

Regular full win 8.1, also has office 365 1-year sub. If it's a code like others (dell) do, you can sell the code on ebay for $50, though I'd be tempted to keep it just for 1tb skydrive.

I read over the reviews, sounds pretty solid. Itching to pull the trigger...

Here's the Stream 8 for $179

I bet that will go on sale for bf.

I went and and snatched a 7. Too tempting, if I don't like it I'll just get half back with ebaying the code.

Give me a review of the 7 some time.  HP has killed support of the ol' Touchpads and I may soon replace them as 'sacrificial pads' for the kids/grandkids/guests.

Drastic

Yeah will do. My old touchpad is still my early morning/late night reader and it's getting a bit long in the tooth for sure. Talk about getting a bang for your buck tho.

Came yesterday, finally had a chance to open the box this am.

Wow! Nice build quality! Much better than the touchpad. Feels like a really solid oversize phone.

Excellent screen too, very quality. Much clear. Wow.

My first non-desktop win device, a couple issues like no batt indicator on home screen, probably easily fixed. Office pre-installed, so I don't see a code to sell.

So, after no time using it (so my opinion may change) it's a really solid device and glad I bought. This is what win8 was made for, easy pickup for a bill.

Hey! No doge memes on th3core, hhh.

Thanks.  Keep me posted.

Drastic

>No doge
much sorry.

So, a day in, and I'm still impressed with the screen and hardware, stuff runs really well for what you get and looks great.

However, the UI has been rather frustrating. Bear in mind this experience for me will be at its worst now, when brand new.

1) First and foremost the desktop running at the res (1280x800) at 7" just isn't suited to my uberfingers. I think you (well, I, I guess) really need to use a pen stylus to be accurate. It's workable yet frustrating to touch something 4-8 times to register the correct click at times. I think 8" might be enough to mitigate it, but not sure.

The rest of these are likely just win on mobile issues, this is my first win mobile device:

2) Man I miss the back and recent-apps buttons from android. Had no idea how huge this would be. My thumb just wants to rotate down-left to go back and it ain't happening. I'll get used to the back button on the browser but that often requires moving my hand. Secondly, I love being able to see all running apps and swipe them away on android. I just realized I can see what's running on windows but not sure how to close them, or if that's possible. No direction of swiping killed them. Also, I like a back button to close what I'm in, ofc no go in windo. Admittedly, I didn't rtfm, but I didn't with android either. Well, technically I did read the piece of paper that came with it, but not the digital stuff.

3) The alt chars on the keyboard require extra movement to select. On android, the most common next char is auto selected on hold. (Holding a top row char gives you a number, you can continue to hold and select something else.) On win, you have to hold and then move to select or you just get the main char. I'm faster and more fluid with android. This might seem like a nitpick but really it's an easy fix and smart design choice.

4) This has been the big one. No keyboard popup when you select an input box when in desktop mode. So, you have to click the form box, click the keyboard button, type your text, and then click the keyboard button again to close the keyboard. Ok, ms, W in T actual F. How does this monster of a corp screw this up? Especially now they're on surface version 3? They changed the tooltip api or something in win8, so all software has to be recoded to work properly. Only one app has done so - chrome. So, here you have ms' main competitor online, with the fix to their screwup, and ms doesn't do squat in the os or their own browser to fix it. I had to try 2-3 different fixes to get something working. It's ok now, though not 100% as an os fix would be, but considering the above 1-4 it was a major PITA to install and try these things to get it working. Joe User probably won't even try, but God help them if they do.

This is supposed to be fixed in win10, but what are these guys doing? They finally get a foot in the door on the market, but they shoot themselves in that same foot. Are they not even using their own products? Are they not even acknowledging the multiple threads on multiple sites (including their own) out there? My only guess is it's something too close to the kernel and they are just focusing efforts on 10. But, at this point, if they don't get it right, and damn right the first time this time (desktop AND mobile) they're hosed.

So, I'm essentially still in evaluation mode. I expected a nitpick or two, but thought this would be a mature mobile os offering and I'd be happy in a day or so. I'm sure disappointed at this point.
