Granted it rots teh brain, but it is addictive.

Surely that's why it's there, so you don't have to remember things. I know I'd be pretty buggered programming without some help from Stack Overflow or whatever Google serves up. Still, that could be replaced with hindsight and books.

There's probably some kind of formula for the availability of information, its importance to you and whether you'll remember it.

Kinda reminds me of something that was said along the lines of, 'how many ancient egyptian documentaries have you seen, and what do you actually know about ancient egypt'. The info you glean is interesting at the time but not often remembered.
