I haven't really thought of the condition since I watched the Hitchcock movie years ago.  Yesterday I spent the day in ER with my mother as they ruled out a stroke as the cause of her vertigo.  Up until yesterday this condition was completely off my radar, now it seems every third person I talk to has had a bout of it.

Anyway, she seems better today.  They gave her a prescription of meclizine, which seems to be helping.  I was just reading that hearing loss can also be a symptom -- this would make sense as I wished I brought some earplugs with me today as I parent-sat and she was going nuts with the TV volume.

There is an ancient thread on it around here or earlier th3core.   Vertigo is absolutely one of the worst ailments you can endure. But endure you will --mostly because you're too sick to put yourself out of the misery.

I was suffering from dizziness/vertigo symptoms for several months last year and was eventually diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

Hope your mother is on the mend Littleman because vertigo isn't pleasant at all. I was lucky that there was a treatment called the Epley maneuver which sorted me out after 2 or 3 sessions. The BPPV hasn't returned since thank goodness.

Keano, thanks for mentioning BPPV and the Epley maneuve.  I hope that's what this is.  I'm taking her to a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning.  I'll update here when if they find out the cause.

Mine was an inner ear infection. But, IIRC, once you have an episode with vertigo your defenses are weakened.  15 years later I had a case of pilot's vertigo (and quit flying).  I still stay away from rides at the county fair.

This has been an exercise in frustration so far.  The doctors have been passively dismissive, my mother is not exactly proactive.  She seems to have tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo and hearing loss.  If you pump those symptoms into Google the top result is something called Meniere's disease.   I've been having to push her to advocate for herself.
