New Linux laptop on the way.  I'm trying to decide what GUI to use Gnome 3 or KDE.

Gnome - besides the forced minimalism, the only real negative I hear about Gnome is that it constantly refreshes everything which can be a resource hog.

KDE - I  kinda like that it is so customizable.  Beyond that I have no recent experience.

Which do you use?  If you have tried either one what were your impressions?

I've used and liked both.  You may also want to look into LXDE too.  It is desktop environment designed to be light and less resource hungry than the big two.  LXDE is usually what I'll put on an older laptop, I've found my kids could navigate it pretty easily.

You may also want to look at Cinnamon, which is a fork of Gnome, but with a more traditional layout -- less forced minimalism.
