Fifty is the new Seventy! The sad part is many of those retirees are retiring early not because they have enough savings, but because they are going out on disability. The rate of disability in some parts of America is astounding. Half of them are cranky rural white men who are dead set against welfare, except insofar as it concerns them personally (literally, that describes a friend's parents).

It's obesity and lack of physical activity. Past generations were often broken down by they jobs, but if they made it to retirement age, they were robust. Now, I am amazed at how out of shape people are compared to my dad's generation.

I was getting my car fixed a couple of years ago and listening quietly to all these people in their 40s and 50s talking about their ailments, almost all related to inactivity when this other woman, who was sitting quietly finally burst out: "Good God! I'm 92 and I'm in better shape than any of you!"

I started talking to her and it turned out that she and her husband worked the high country before WWII and then ran the cattle ranch that occupied the land my house is on (which ceased to be a ranch in the early 1960s).

She looked like she could still herd cattle if she had to.
