I was trying to explain to Theresa the other day everything I hate about the productivity cult. I was grasping at ideas, but not really making the case. She understood why I opted out, but not why it literally made me mad the cult existed. I just couldn't quite hit the target.

It's what I would have said if I were smarter and had thought about it a lot more.

The most effective time management tool ever discovered?

The word "No."

Economists still argue about exactly why things turned out so differently, but the simplest answer is "capitalism". Keynes seems to have assumed that we would naturally throttle down on work once our essential needs, plus a few extra desires, were satisfied. Instead, we just keep finding new things to need. Depending on your rung of the economic ladder, it's either impossible, or at least usually feels impossible, to cut down on work in exchange for more time.

I feel like this is almost blasphemy, yet it is very true.  Hyper-consumerism is a type of self-imposed slavery.  The problem is that the excess has become the norm, so people can't even recognize it anymore.

So, I'm guessing you're not in the market for one of these, EG.
