You really see this on a slow connection. Your browser status bar constantly reads, "Waiting on facebook.com" or what have you. People don't realize that advertising makes even sites with no ads on them slower. If they buy ads, then they have tracking scripts from Facebook, Google Analytics, Google Ads, Sojern, Quantcast, MediaIQ, etc etc etc

You really, really see this when you run ScriptSafe or similar.  Many big dog sites have 20-25+ 3rd party sources. Some belong to them, though often with cryptic domains. Others are tracking & analytics. And still others are WTF-Is-That?  Sometimes I have to allow 6-8 sources just to roughly render the page enough to read and see pix.
