Saw that. Between bears, snow, and the configuration of our yard, we haven't figured out composting. I know. Very bad Californians. Maybe this will be the kick we need. And no, we can't just put that stuff "in the green bin" everyone is talking about.

Actually, we do have some similar drop-off possibilities. It's a 30-min drive, so we end up putting compostables in the freezer until we can get them dropped off. It's a PITA.

I've seen some systems built out of an oil drum that can be locked down against bears. It's a matter of will. There's always a solution.

Oil drum anti-bear designs were abandoned in the Shenandoah NP and replaced with some vault-like trash cans.  PITA to use.

Actually, last time I looked, it was all DIY stuff. Now it appears that the bear-resistant tumblers are plastic and easy to buy.

For garbage storage, I use a job site box, bought on sale for $180 and painted brown.

That's about $1000 cheaper than the custom-made bear-resistant bins and bears have made dozens of attempts to get it. No successes so far.
