The Ripple Energy co-op I'm in looks like it may be held back by a few months due to grid connection, not as bad as the decades long issues some other projects are facing.

Sounds like reform is definitely needed, especially if nefarious outfits can fill the backlog with projects that'll never happen. The process is definitely outdated and maybe partly a consequence of US/UK grids being older.
