Neat. You can see the cobblestones have been torn up to make the barricades.

I used to use a lot of 19th century reference books and they are *full* of engravings, usually made from a photo. I'm not sure whether it was a quality issue or whether it was actually cheaper to hire and engraver to make the engraving from a photo than to pay a printer to print at high enough quality to reproduce a photo well.

But even 50 years on, reference books tended to be engravings.
