Eco-friendly search engine Ecosia is now available as an optional search engine on all Apple OS's as of the latest update.  Ecosia uses revenue from ads to plant trees around the globe.  Ecosia uses Bing for it's search results.  It's not as private as DDG but it's more private than Google and many others.

Google remains Apple's factory default search engine.

Good for them. They are quite popular in the US I think. Of all the Bing variants they're a good candidate.

One of my kids uses Ecosia as her go-to search.

According to CNBC, Google pays Apple between $8 billion and $12 billion per year to be the default search engine on Apple products.

I'm still wondering if Apple will, somehow, cook up their own search engine just to get governments off their back.  And, if so, how they would do it.

Well, that graph above shows that Google has 95% of mobile search.  If the US ever starts being anti-monopoly again we could see a situation where Google ends up having to pay Apple to start their own search engine or to use a competitor like DDG.

The move to allow Ecosia has to have been a requested feature from Apple's customer base.  It's a good move for Apple and will likely build the Ecosia user base, so a win - win.
