"free and open" is not the phrase I would use to describe today's internet. That requires that I define "free" and "open" in not just narrow ways, but the same ways that the tech giants define them. There are aspects of this article that feel like a brilliantly placed "submarine."

I believe you made this point recently. Right now we're in a race between the progressive attenuation of old-school tracking and a more modern profiling based on content and behavior on the page that will allow some level of optimization for those who are opting out of other tracking.

Once you've spotted a few submarines, it's hard to not see them, usually somewhere in the middle of a fairly long article. I wouldn't call this a true submarine, though, in that it's the author himself rather than some "industry authority" quoted by the "journalist" writing the article
