Wow.... that will be a mess. I think most websites will ignore that for a year at least.

so many questions just straght away. I bet theres loads more.

Whats the cost of not using it? Alternatives? Can you get as good a data from PPC if you don't use it?

Yes, Matomo is a good one.

I get that if I am an EU company and I use a US-based service like Google Analytics, I am potentially doing something illegal and failing to comply with my local law.

What I have never understood is why I see a lot of US-based business with no offices, staff or services offered outside of the US freak out and take action because of these rulings. The hotel group I worked for expunged all sorts of historical data and took other measures to comply with GDPR. When I protested they said corporate legal said they had to do this because some of our customers are from the EU. I also see all kinds of US-based consultancies who have GDPR compliance buttons on their blog. I mean really?

I just made the switch from GA to Matomo (formerly Piwik) for analytics on a couple of sites and will switch more.

Legal concerns were not the motivation. Rather, I've been on a mission to improve my PageSpeed scores by serving more things locally. Potential legal improvements are a bonus.
